Georg Balthazar von Neumayer ( 21 June 1826 – 24 May 1909 ), was a German polar explorer and scientist who conceived the idea of international cooperation for meteorology and scientific observation.

Between 1816 and 1826 discussions between Sir Stamford Raffles, Sir Humphry Davy, Sir Joseph Banks and others led to the idea that an establishment along the lines of the Jardin des Plantes was needed that would house a zoological collection " which should interest and amuse the public.

LaGrange College arose from the idea offered at a November 28, 1826 meeting of the Tennessee Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church to establish a college which would not be “ religious or theological.

The idea of establishing a botanic garden in Washington, D. C., was also supported by the Washington Botanical Society, organized in 1817, many of whose members were also members of the Columbian Institute, however this society disbanded in 1826.

Robert Colgate ( 1758 – 1826 ) was an 18th century English farmer, politician and sympathiser with the American War of Independence and French Revolution, whose republican ideals impelled him to leave their farm in Shoreham, Kent in March 1798 and emigrate to Baltimore, Maryland, in the United States of America, after which the family settled on a farm in Harford County, Maryland.
