The eldest of seven children, Housman was born at Valley House in Fockbury, a hamlet on the outskirts of Bromsgrove in Worcestershire, to Sarah Jane ( née Williams, married 17 Jun 1858 in Woodchester, Gloucester ) and Edward Housman ( whose family came from Lancaster ), and was baptized on 24 Apr 1859 at Christ Church, in Catshill.

Law was born on 16 September 1858 in Kingston ( now Rexton ), New Brunswick, to the Reverend James Law, a minister of the Free Church of Scotland with Scottish and Irish ancestry, and his wife Eliza Kidston Law.

Elisabeth " Eliza, or Élisa " Rachel Félix ( also Elizabeth-Rachel Félix ), better known only as Mademoiselle Rachel ( February 21, 1821, Mumpf, Rheinfelden, Aargau, Switzerland-January 3, 1858, Le Cannet, France ), was a French actress.

In 1858, he married Mary Ruddell-Todd, the daughter of James Ruddell-Todd ( 1788 – 1852 ) M. P., and his wife Eliza Henrietta Campbell, daughter of daughter of Duncan Campbell ( 1771 – 1840 ), 5th of Inverneill House.

In 1858 he married Eliza Wheeler, the sister in law of the painter John Rogers Herbert, one of the early influences on the Pre-Raphaelites.

Edith Anna Somerville ( 1858 – 1949 ) and her cousin, Violet Florence Martin ( 1862 – 1915 ) published their first novel, An Irish Cousin in 1889 under the names of Somerville and Ross.

In 1858 his grandson, the second Earl, succeeded his first cousin once removed as seventh Duke of Devonshire.

However, in 1858 he was named as the successor to the main Tokugawa house due to his cousin the 13th shogun, Iesada, being heirless.

His younger brother, Benjamin Wyon ( 1802 – 1858 ), his nephews, Joseph Shepherd Wyon ( 1836 – 1873 ) and Alfred Benjamin Wyon ( 1837 – 1884 ), and his cousin, William Wyon ( 1795 – 1851 ) were also distinguished medallists.

His estates then passed for life to his cousin Thomas Pemberton, who took the name of Leigh, and made Hindley Hall his residence ; he was raised to the peerage as Baron Kingsdown in 1858.

On January 14, 1858, Knott married his cousin, Sarah R. McElroy.
