Founded as the Pennsylvania Female College on December 11, 1869, by Reverend William Trimble Beatty, Chatham was initially situated in the Berry mansion on Woodland Road off Fifth Avenue in the neighborhood of Shadyside.

The county was created by the 1874-1875 territorial legislature and was named for William Henry Harrison Mercer ( 1884 – 1901 ), an early rancher who settled north of Bismarck in 1869.

In Newfoundland, the Anti-Confederates, led by businessman Charles Fox Bennett, defeated the government of the pro-Confederation Premier Sir Frederick Carter in 1869, effectively killing Confederation as a saleable proposal for two generations.

The Nuttall Encyclopædia is named for Dr. Peter Austin Nuttall ( d. 1869 ), whose works, such as Standard Pronouncing Dictionary of the English Language ( published in 1863 ), were eventually acquired by Frederick Warne, and would be published for decades to come.
