In 1890 the PRR gained control of the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad commonly called the Panhandle Route a line that ran west from Pittsburgh to Bradford, Ohio, where it split, with one line to Chicago and the other to East St. Louis, Illinois via Indianapolis, Indiana.

In 1890, the Imperial Rescript on Education was issued, and students were required to ritually recite its oath to " offer yourselves courageously to the State " as well as to protect the Imperial family.

Founded as a private teachers college in 1890 and adopted by the State in 1899, the university is the flagship of four institutions governed by University of North Texas System — a system established in 2003 by the 78th Texas Legislature.
