The subsequent Montenegrin proclamation of independence on June 2006 and the Serbian proclamation of independence on 5 June ended the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro and thus the last remaining vestiges of the former Yugoslavia.

Following the dissolution of SFR Yugoslavia during the Yugoslav wars, Portugal maintained relations with the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, later reconstituted as Serbia and Montenegro and finally as Serbia after Montenegro declared its independence in July 2006.

In 2003, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was transformed into the state union of Serbia and Montenegro, which was abolished in 2006, making the eastern part of Syrmia part of an independent Republic of Serbia.

Since 1992, Yugoslav Bačka has been part of Federal Republic of Yugoslavia ( renamed to Serbia and Montenegro in 2003 ), and since 2006 it is part of an independent Republic of Serbia.

* 29 September 2006: Gol Airlines flight 1907, a Boeing 737-8EH registration PR-GTD en route from Manaus to Brasília collided with a business jet Embraer Legacy on its first leg, fell, disintegrated in midair, and crashed into the Amazon forest in the north of the State of Mato Grosso, killing all of the 154 passengers and crew on board of the Gol aircraft.

However, in February 2006 the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany struck down these provisions of the law, stating such preventive measures were unconstitutional and would essentially be state-sponsored murder, even if such an act would save many more lives on the ground.

Externally, political activity on the part of Ásatrú organizations has surrounded campaigns against alleged religious discrimination, such as the call for the introduction of an Ásatrú " emblem of belief " by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs to parallel the Wiccan pentacle granted to the widow of Patrick Stewart in 2006.
