Shortly after the Hiscock's gully gold rush of 1851 following the discovery of gold at Hiscock's, 3 kilometres west of Buninyong ( now Magpie approximately 10 kilometres south of Eureka ), the newly created Victorian colonial government announced in August 1851 that it would charge a licence fee to miners on the crown land.

On August 28, four days of fighting broke out on a front at Blair Mountain between coal company militia and thousands of Union miners led by Bill Blizzard.

Mining disasters in Leigh included the explosion of firedamp which caused the deaths of 38 miners at Bedford Colliery on 13 August 1886.

The discovery on August 21, 1851 by James Dunlop and James Reagan that sparked the Ballarat Gold Rush was at the base of the hill a couple of hundred metres from Sovereign Hill park and the " Welcome " nugget — found by a group of Cornish miners in 1858, and being the second largest gold nugget in the world — was also found in Ballarat in the Red Hill mine which is recreated in Sovereign Hill.

The Lonmin Platinum Mining Incident, widely referred to as a massacre, occurred when police broke up a wildcat strike by platinum mine workers on Thursday, 16 August 2012, and resulted in the deaths of 34 miners, as well as the injury of an additional 78 miners.

On the latter occasion, on 1 August 1977, 35, 000 Jiu miners gathered in the main yard of the Lupeni mine to protest against a new decree that raised the age of retirement from 50 to 55 and reduced the miners ’ pensions.
