Barrio Bellavista ( Bellavista Neighborhood ) is an area that lies between the Mapocho River and San Cristóbal Hill in Santiago, Chile.

In 1867, Doctor Carlo Posta built a hotel on Monte Generoso, near to the current location of the Bellavista stop on the Monte Generoso railway.

In 1891, a long tramway was opened to link Bellavista station on the Monte Generoso railway with Doctor Posta's nearby hotel.

It is bordered by the districts of Bellavista and downtown Lima on the north ; Pueblo Libre, Magdalena del Mar and downtown Lima on the east ; the Pacific Ocean on the south ; and the La Perla district on the west.

The Bellavista and the La Perla districts are located to the southeast, while La Punta borders the district on the west.

The Bojayá massacre () was a massacre that occurred on May 2, 2002 in the Colombian town of Bojayá ( with its urban centre also referred to as Bellavista ), in Chocó department.

At least 250 paramilitary combatants moved into Bellavista on 21 April, 2002, and remained in the populated area despite protests by local residents.

Intense fighting broke out on May 1st in neighboring Vigía del Fuerte municipality ( Antioquia department ), and spread to Bellavista later in the day.

On May 2, 2002, in the town of Bojayá ( with its urban centre also referred to as Bellavista ), FARC guerrillas seized the town in an attempt to take control of the Atrato River region from AUC paramilitaries, in the process killing approximately 119 civilians in an apparently indiscriminate attack with improvised homemade mortars assembled with gas cylinders parts ( known in Spanish as pipeta or Cilindro bomba ).

Regional matters are handled by the Regional Government of Callao ( Gobierno Regional del Callao ), which is located in the Bellavista District.

After a failed military campaigns in 1824 that ended in deafeat at Mocopulli, and the 1826 battles of Pudeto and Bellavista, he signed the treaty of Tantauco, in which Spain renounced definitively to that area.

Many of the city's esteemed intellectuals and artists live in Bellavista, following in the footsteps of its most famous denizen, Pablo Neruda.
