Apollo ( Attic, Ionic, and Homeric Greek:, Apollōn ( gen .: ); Doric:, Apellōn ; Arcadocypriot:, Apeilōn ; Aeolic:, Aploun ; ) is one of the most important and complex of the Olympian deities in ancient Greek and Roman religion, Greek and Roman mythology, and Greco – Roman Neopaganism.

The earliest attested occurrence of the name, written in Linear B, is Po-se-da-o or Po-se-da-wo-ne, which correspond to Poseidaōn and Poseidawonos in Mycenean Greek ; in Homeric Greek it appears as ( Poseidaōn ); in Aeolic as ( Poteidaōn ); and in Doric as ( Poteidan ), ( Poteidaōn ), and ( Poteidas ).

He shared Simonides's approach to vocabulary, employing a very mild form of the traditional, literary Doric dialect, with some Aeolic words and some traditional epithets borrowed from epic.

Later Greek literature wrote of three main dialect divisions: Aeolic, Doric and Ionic.

His most important work is De Graecae Linguae Dialectis ( 1839-1843 ), which, although unfortunately incomplete, dealing only with Aeolic and Doric, and in some respects superseded by modern research, became a standard treatise on the subject.

The Aeolic dialect shows many archaisms in comparison to the other Ancient Greek dialects ( Attic-Ionic, Doric, Northwestern and Arcadocypriot ), as well as many innovations.

Most academics take the view that the ancient Macedonians probably spoke either a language that was a member of the North-Western Greek dialect group ( related to Doric and Aeolic ), or a language very closely related to Greek which would form a Graeco-Macedonian or Hellenic branch ; others such as Eugene Borza reach the conclusion that there is insufficient evidence on which to base a conclusion as to whether the original language of the Macedonians was a form of Greek or not, but that the Macedonians were most likely of proto-Greek stock.

In the archaic and classical periods, there were three main dialects of the Greek language: Aeolic, Ionic, and Doric, corresponding to the three main tribes of the Greeks, the Aeolians ( chiefly living in the islands of the Aegean and the west coast of Asia Minor north of Smyrna ), the Ionians ( mostly settled in the west coast of Asia Minor, including Smyrna and the area to the south of it ), and the Dorians ( primarily the Greeks of the coast of the Pelopennesus, for example, of Sparta, Crete and the southernmost parts of the west coast of Asia Minor ).

It was written in a dialect which was a mixture of the Doric and Aeolic, and which was spoken at Rhodes, where, or in the adjacent island of Telos, Erinna was born.

The Proto-Greek language is the assumed last common ancestor of all known varieties of Greek, including Mycenaean, the classical Greek dialects ( Attic-Ionic, Aeolic, Doric and Arcado-Cypriot ), and ultimately Koine, Byzantine and modern Greek.
