The Anzac Mounted Division ( officially known as the Australian and New Zealand Mounted Division ) was a mounted infantry division formed in March 1916 in Egypt during World War I following the Battle of Gallipoli when the Australian and New Zealand regiments returned from fighting in a dismounted role.
The Australian Mounted Division was a mounted infantry, light horse division formed in Egypt during World War I.
A different 2nd Mounted Division, was formed in Egypt in 1918 from the Indian elements of the 5th Cavalry Division in France, but then renumbered as the 5th Cavalry Division, served in Palestine and was a part of the Palestine Occupation Force.
After the 42nd Division left for the Western Front, Eastern Force under the command of Dobell, consisted of four infantry divisions ; the 52nd ( Lowland ) Division, the 53rd ( Welsh ) Division, the 54th ( East Anglian ) Division, and the newly raised 74th ( Yeomanry ) Division, formed from dismounted yeomanry already serving in Egypt and two mounted divisions ; the Anzac Mounted Division and the partly formed Imperial Mounted Divisions.
The brigade remained in Egypt and, combined with the 1st and 2nd Australian Light Horse Brigades, made up the Anzac Mounted Division which served through the Sinai and Palestine campaign.
Then in March 1916, the ANZAC Mounted Division with three Australian and one New Zealand brigade, was formed for service in Egypt and Palestine.
It seems, however, that Travis, was not scheduled to proceed with the main body of the Southland Mounted Rifles, presumably having been assigned to a rear detail or reserve party that was to remain in Egypt until called for later on.
The Citation in The London Gazette on 16 February 1883 read " During the reconnaissance upon, Kafr Dowar, Egypt, on 5 August 1882, the Mounted Infantry, with which Private Corbett was serving, came under a hot fire from the enemy and suffered some loss, including Lieutenant Howard Vyse, mortally wounded.
