Summerhill School was founded in 1921 in Hellerau near Dresden, Germany by Neill as part of Neue Schule (" New School ").

The International School in Hellerau gave Neill the first opportunity to lead a school based on his own principles.

In Hellerau near Dresden he visited Lilian Neustätter, whom he had met at King Alfred School and who later became his wife.

Jacques-Dalcroze, a Swiss composer and music educator, had founded a school in Hellerau in 1910 that closed in 1914 with the outbreak of World War I.

Tessenow and fellow architects Hermann Muthesius and Richard Riemerschmid are credited with the 1908 Gartenstadt Hellerau, near Dresden, a housing project that was the first tangible result of the influence of the English garden city movement in Germany.

In 1999, David Chipperfield was awarded the Tessenow Gold Medal, what was followed by a comprehensive exhibition of his work together with the work of the Tessenow Stipendiat and Spanish architect Andrés Jaque, held in the Hellerau Festspielhaus.
