In 2004, SNK produced the first 3D installment of the series, KOF: Maximum Impact.

The game and its sequel KOF: Maximum Impact 2 and it's 2 upgraded versions, revises much of the backstory for characters and settings from previous games.

It has since been released as a bonus DVD, packaged with KOF: Maximum Impact 2 ( The King of Fighters 2006 in the US ).

There are also original titles based on their existing properties, such as Metal Slug 3D and the KOF: Maximum Impact series.

In KOF Maximum Impact 2, Ryuhaku Todoh drives the truck in one of the extra games.

In KOF: Maximum Impact 2 and Regulation A, Geese is playable under the name of Nightmare Geese.

In KOF: Maximum Impact 2 ( 2006 ), one of Mai's second outfit color schemes is exactly Andy Bogard's standard palette, even giving Mai blonde hair.

Additionally, KOF: Maximum Impact producer, Falcoon, stated that attempting to change an " untouchable " design such as Iori's put him under severe pressure.

In another review from the same site, writer Jeremy Dunhan praised Iori's appearance in KOF: Maximum Impact as one of the best designs from the game.

In KOF: Maximum Impact, Ryo's alternate costume is similar to that of his Buriki One costume.

The spin-off games KOF: Maximum Impact and Maximum Impact 2 also feature a Ryo as a playable character, with the latter also featuring his " Mr. Karate " version as hidden character.

KOF: Maximum Impact marks the first time since Art of Fighting 2 that she has received a new outfit.

KOF ' 95 introduced Kyo's rival Iori Yagami to the series and was the first game to mention the presence of the Orochi clan, which would serve as the central plot element in the following two games in the series.

The two following games in the series, KOF 2000 and KOF 2001, continue the NESTS storyline, with each game further unraveling the mystery of the organization.

There are two stories on it, one which is serious and one that is a parody focused on KOF ' 03.

KOF ' 97 follows the same format as the previous KOF games, but introduces two distinct playing styles which the player can select before choosing their team: Advance and Extra.

Extra mode is based on the first two games in the series, KOF ' 94 and KOF ' 95.

The second compilation,, features the original Neo Geo versions of KOF ' 99, KOF 2000, and KOF 2001, as well as the corresponding Dreamcast versions of each game.

To appease all fans, they also included an older version of Kyo from KOF ' 94 into The King of Fighters ' 97 and placed The King of Fighters ' 95 version of Kyo in The King of Fighters ' 98, which made both versions of Kyo popular during location tests.

In Buriki One, his look is similar to Takuma's in the KOF series, only with his traditional spiked hair dyed blonde and a dark grey gi instead of white or orange.
