After seeing a broadcast of Kes ( Ken Loach, 1969 ) on television, he decided to become an actor.

In Kes ( 1969 ), Welland had played an English schoolteacher, an occupation in which ( like fellow Kes actor Brian Glover and its writer Barry Hines ) he had been employed, teaching art at Manchester Road Secondary Modern school in Leigh, where he was known as " Ted " Williams because of his Teddy Boy curly hair style.

He was also a falconer, keeping a bird in his room which was used in the film Kes.

Using their new foreknowledge of these events, the present Janeway and Tuvok create a hologram of Kes at the time who reminds her future self about her affection for the crew and how much they had cared for her, thus showing Kes how irrational her hatred is.

At the beginning of the episode, Kes is nine years old and ready to accept her death at the normal age for Ocampans.

Weathering has also given rise to circular " rock basins '" formed by the accumulation of water and the repeated freezing and thawing – a fine example is to be found at Kes Tor on Dartmoor.

Marc played the part of Billy Casper in " Kes " at Birmingham rep studio and National small scale and schools tour directed by John Herriman for Snap Theatre Company and continued his career with a role in a 1988 production of Godspell which he won by writing to the producers, and went unrepresented until the following year.

Glover's performance in Kes led to parts at the Royal Court Theatre, London, notably in Lindsay Anderson's The Changing Room ( 1971 ).

In one scene while possessed, Kes almost kisses another female, but is called away at the last moment.

Hines is best known for the novel A Kestrel for a Knave ( 1968 ), which was adapted by the author for the film version Kes ( 1969 ), which was directed by Ken Loach.

Kes had been a slave of the Kazon after her attempt to escape the tedium of normal Ocampan life.

The Doctor, however, is not, so he devises a bio-temporal chamber, which has the unintentional effect of reactivating chronotons dormant in Kes ' body from her exposure to the chronoton torpedo several years earlier.

These include New Guinea ( the largest Pacific island and second largest island in the world after Greenland, which is divided into the sovereign nation of Papua New Guinea and the Indonesian provinces of Maluku, Papua and West Papua ), New Caledonia, Zenadh Kes ( Torres Strait Islands ), Vanuatu, Fiji, and the Solomon Islands.

En route, they encounter Neelix, a space trader who is eager to help them out in exchange for helping to rescue his companion, the Ocampa Kes, from the violent Kazon which inhabit the planet's surface.

A Kes only eats meat he has slaughtered himself, which his hosts then prepare both for him and themselves.

It is during this episode that Kes calls off her long-term romantic relationship with Neelix, under the mind control of Tieran during an away mission claiming he is too jealous, suffocating, and protective.

It's left unexplained why Voyagers crew is unaware of Kes ' warning when they encounter the Krenim later in season 4, during the episodes of the same name ( Season 4, episodes 8 and 9 ).

Neelix and Kes are romantically involved when they board Voyager, however, their relationship is later terminated by Kes under the control of an alien rebel during an away mission.

In the series pilot, Kes is taken on board the USS Voyager crew with her partner, Neelix, who was responsible for rescuing her from the Kazon.

Kes receives medical training and helps the Doctor learn how to interact more easily with the crew.

In the show's fourth season, Kes is replaced on the ship by Seven of Nine, a Borg drone ( known colloquially as Seven ), who was assimilated as a six-year-old Human girl but liberated from the collective by the Voyager crew.

In the pilot episode " Caretaker ", Neelix and his Ocampan partner Kes are rescued from the Kazon, and they join the crew of the USS Voyager.

As Voyager starts on a 75-year journey back to the Alpha Quadrant, Janeway integrates the Maquis crew into the Starfleet crew, with Chakotay as her First Officer, and accepts Neelix and Kes ' offer to remain on board as a guide to the local area of space.

When the crew of the starship Voyager was stranded 70, 000 light years from home by a being known as the Caretaker, they met Kes who helped them rescue several crew members.

As the crew recovers, Torres discovers there is air on the other side of the rift, and believes that it may be possible to rescue Kes.

She has found a way to bridge the Kes river and travel into Nospherus, the no-man's land of the Sem.

She later marries Tom Paris, and they have a daughter Linnis ( named after Kes ' mother ).

The film Alien 3 makes use of Glover's characteristic " bald-headed, rough-looking " style for the role of " Superintendent Andrews " Glover's first acting job and probably his most memorable came playing Mr Sugden, the comically overbearing sports teacher in Ken Loach's film Kes ( a job offered to him when Barry Hines, a fellow teacher who wrote the film, suggested him to the director ).
