Franz Anton Mesmer ( May 23, 1734 – March 5, 1815 ) sometimes incorrectly referred to as Friedrich Anton Mesmer, was a German physician with an interest in astronomy, who theorised that there was a natural energetic transference that occurred between all animated and inanimate objects that he called magnétisme animal ( animal magnetism ) and other spiritual forces often grouped together as mesmerism.

He was brought to the island in October 1815 and lodged at Longwood, where he died on 5 May 1821.

However, Napoleon reinstated it in May 1802, then finally abolished it permanently in March 1815.

Meanwhile in Italy, Joachim Murat, whom the Allies had allowed to remain King of Naples after Napoleon's initial defeat, once again allied with his brother-in-law, triggering the Neapolitan War ( March to May, 1815 ).

But the proclamation failed and the Austrians soon crushed Murat at the Battle of Tolentino ( 2 May to 3 May 1815 ), forcing him to flee.

The Bourbons returned to the throne of Naples on 20 May 1815.

With the signing of the treaty on 21 May 1815, 57 % of Saxon territory and 42 % of the Saxon population was turned over to Prussia.

On 22 May 1815 Frederick Augustus abdicated as ruler of the Duchy of Warsaw, whose territory was annexed mainly to Russia, but also partly to Prussia and Austria.

At the same meeting of the board of trustees at which Professor Moore was elected president of Williams College, May 2, 1815, Dr. Packard of Shelburne introduced the following motion: " That a committee of six persons be appointed to take into consideration the removal of the college to some other part of the Commonwealth, to make all necessary inquiries which have a bearing on the subject, and report at the next meeting.

The consequent Peace of Amiens lasted only one year ( 18 May 1803 ) and was the only period of peace during the so-called ' Great French War ' between 1793 and 1815.

The final quarter jointly owned by two Bloomington brothers, Jesse W. Fell ( 10 November 1808 – 25 February 1878 ) and Kersey H. Fell ( 1 May 1815 – 1 May 1893 ) The five were a distinguished group of men and all had links to the Chicago and Mississippi Railroad.

In May 1815 the last of the Harmonists who had remained behind until the sale of their town in Pennsylvania was completed departed for their new town along the Wabash River.

Brown Township, named for a Major General Jacob Brown of the War of 1812, was formed on May 3, 1815 by the Pennsylvania General Assembly from parts of Mifflin and Pine Townships.

On 10 May 1810, a squadron consisting of the 36-gun frigate HMS Caroline, formerly French frigate HMS Piedmontaise, 18-gun sloop HMS Barracouta, and the 12-gun transport HMS Mandarin left Madras with money, supplies and troops to support the garrison at Amboyna, recently captured from the Dutch.

One of the major events on the road to revolution in which Madeira played a key role was the British seizure of John Hancock ’ s sloop the Liberty on May 9, 1768.

Cleng Peerson ( 17 May 1783 – 16 December 1865 ) was a Norwegian-American pioneer who led the first group of Norwegians to emigrate to the United States, traveling on the Norwegian sloop Restauration.

With the Peace of Amiens under strain and war with France under Napoleon Bonaparte imminent in May 1803, Hornblower is promoted from Lieutenant to Commander and appointed to command the sloop HMS Hotspur.

By May 1782 he had been transferred to sloop in which he was part of the squadron that captured a French squadron including the 38-gun which was bought into British service.

He received promotion to lieutenant on May 17, 1828, and served as navigating officer of the sloop on her historic circumnavigation, and then served on the flagships of the Mediterranean, Brazil and Pacific Squadrons.
