Israeli tourism to Morocco is encouraged by the World Federation of Moroccan Jewry, a non-governmental private Jewish organization.

In 1877 the Mufti of Jerusalem accepted a Jewish offer to buy the Moroccan Quarter, but a dispute within the Jewish community prevented the agreement from going ahead.

In 1887 a promising attempt was made by Baron Rothschild who conceived a plan to purchase and demolish the Moroccan Quarter as " a merit and honor to the Jewish People.

Waves of immigration to the area has occurred for at least a century, including, but certainly not limited to, people of Irish, Jewish, Caribbean, Spanish, and Moroccan extraction.

Moroccan and other North African Jews ( sometimes known as " Maghrebi Jews ") are closely associated with the Sephardim proper ( Jews of Iberian descent ), both because the Jewish community of Al-Andalus was itself partly of Maghrebi Jewish origin and because many Sephardim settled in North Africa after their expulsion from Spain.

There is a long established Jewish community, a number of Hindu Indians and a Moroccan Muslim population.

This was made possible due to the presence in Israel of a large Moroccan Jewish community.

Ultimately, the term came to designate Jewish quarters in other Moroccan cities.

Since the establishment of the State of Israel, in 1948, most Moroccan Jews have emigrated to the new Jewish state, encouraged by the Jewish Agency.
