Eldred was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates out of Florida International University in the 6th round of the 2002 Major League Baseball Draft.

In honor of Rachel Carson's legacy, the University President, Esther L. Barazzone, Ph. D. and others led a campaign to rename the Ninth Street Bridge in Downtown Pittsburgh as the Rachel Carson Bridge.

The East Pittsburgh School District included Bessemer Avenue Elementary School and East Pittsburgh Junior / Senior High School on Howard Street.

From 1907 until 1931, it was a stop on the interurban Pittsburgh and Butler Street Railway, which linked Pittsburgh with Butler.

Brownsville Road runs along this ridge, and connects South Eighteenth Street in Pittsburgh with the neighborhood of Carrick and communities further east.

To the south, across the Allegheny River via the 62nd Street Bridge, are the Pittsburgh neighborhoods of Upper Lawrenceville and Morningside.

The city was linked to Pittsburgh via Mars in 1907 by the Pittsburgh and Butler Street Railway and to Evans City in 1908 by the Pittsburgh, Harmony, Butler and New Castle Railway, both interurban trolley lines.

In 1904, the Pittsburgh and Butler Street Railway gained permission from Mars to construct its right-of-way through the borough.

The road to Pittsburgh, called Pitt Street, remains in part today as an archaic and indirect route to the city.

The Allenport & Roscoe Street Railway was formed in 1903 and was purchased by Pittsburgh Railways to form part of their interurban line to Pittsburgh in 1906.

For many years, a Christmas pilgrimage was held on Pittsburgh Street ; the pilgrimage is now also held at the farm.

Carnegie worked to develop several iron works, eventually forming The Keystone Bridge Works and the Union Ironworks, in Pittsburgh.

Carnegie's empire grew to include the J. Edgar Thomson Steel Works, ( named for John Edgar Thomson, Carnegie's former boss and president of the Pennsylvania Railroad ), Pittsburgh Bessemer Steel Works, the Lucy Furnaces, the Union Iron Mills, the Union Mill ( Wilson, Walker & County ), the Keystone Bridge Works, the Hartman Steel Works, the Frick Coke Company, and the Scotia ore mines.

The Neville Island Bridge carries Interstate 79 and the Yellow Belt across the Ohio River and over Neville Island, west of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

U. S. Route 30 highway passes through North Braddock before reaching the George Westinghouse Bridge to East Pittsburgh.

The Lincoln Highway, US Route 30, traverses North Versailles and on its western border crosses the Turtle Creek valley via the George Westinghouse Bridge into East Pittsburgh.

In Beaver County, Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh, American Bridge Company founded Ambridge, Pennsylvania in 1905 as a company town for American Bridge ; American Bridge is still based near Ambridge today in nearby Coraopolis, Pennsylvania.

On July 11, 2002, the Homestead High-Level Bridge which connects Pittsburgh to Homestead over the Monongahela River at Homestead was renamed the Homestead Grays Bridge in honor of the team.
