After the later establishment of the People's Republic of China and its adoption of Hanyu Pinyin, the use of Zhuyin today is limited, but it's still widely used in Taiwan where the Republic of China still governs.

In Taiwan, the term " mainland " is often used to refer to mainland China ( Hong Kong and Macau excluded ), by the Kuomintang ( KMT, " Chinese Nationalist Party ") and its supporters, who share the view that China encompasses both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

After the Nationalists lost control of mainland China to the Communists in the Chinese Civil War, Chiang Ching-kuo followed his father and the retreating Nationalist forces to Taiwan.

When the fighting worsened in 1948 between the Communist and Nationalist armies, the Palace Museum and other five institutions made the decision to send some of the most prized items to Taiwan.

After losing the Civil War against the Communist Party in 1949, Chiang Kai Shek ( Jiang JieShi ) and the Nationalist Party fled to Taiwan, establishing a new government there, but always maintained that their government represented all of China, i. e. both Taiwan and the mainland.

Taiwanization's influence on the government of the ROC has caused instability: after the Communist Party of China expelled the ROC in the Chinese Civil War from most of Chinese territory in 1949 and founded the PRC, the ROC's Chinese Nationalist government, which still held Taiwan, continued to claim legitimacy as the government of all of China.
