Edgar Rice Burroughs describes an unrelated game of " Martian Chess " called Jetan in The Chessmen of Mars.

Burroughs used the same device in the sequels, The Gods of Mars, The Chessmen of Mars and Swords of Mars.

Before turning to art as a profession, he was a professional musician with the showband Chessmen.

Several post-Mariner works are homages to the older phase of Mars fiction, circumventing the scientific picture of a dry and lifeless Mars with an unbreathable atmosphere through such science fiction generic staples as positing its future terraforming, or creating alternate history versions of Mars, where Burroughs ' Barsoom, Bradbury's Martian Chronicles or The War of the Worlds are literal truth.

He loved Burroughs ' The Warlord of Mars so much that at the age of 12 he wrote his own sequel.

In 1912 Edgar Rice Burroughs published A Princess of Mars, the first of his three-decade-long series of Barsoom novels, situated on Mars and featuring John Carter as the hero.

Other pulp fantasy fiction — such as Edgar Rice Burroughs ' Barsoom series and Leigh Brackett's Sea Kings of Mars — have a similar feel to sword and sorcery, but, because alien science replaces the supernatural, it is usually described as planetary romance or sword and planet, and considered to fall more in the area of science fiction.

The names " Dejah Thoris ", " Burroughs ", and " Carter " are overt references to John Carter and Dejah Thoris, the main protagonists of the Barsoom ( Mars ) novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs.

Also in 1974, TSR published Warriors of Mars, a miniatures rules book set in the fantasy world of Barsoom originally imagined by Edgar Rice Burroughs in his series of novels about John Carter of Mars, to which Gygax paid homage in the " Preface " of the first edition of D & D.

However, Gygax and TSR published the Mars book without permission from ( or payment to ) the Burroughs estate, and soon after a cease and desist order was issued and Warriors was pulled from distribution.

On or about his eleventh birthday, he " had gotten The Gods of Mars and The Warlord of Mars " by Edgar Rice Burroughs, books which " opened up a complete new world for me.
