Several popular franchise-series, including Fatal Fury, The King of Fighters, Metal Slug and Samurai Shodown, were released for the platform.

The longevity of Neo Geo games kept it alive in arcades, particularly in Japan, where the newest installment of its flagship franchise, The King of Fighters, caused a stir with every new release.

The first three games released were Fatal Fury: King of Fighters, Art of Fighting, and World Heroes.

Games usually confine characters to moving left and right and jumping, although some games such as Fatal Fury: King of Fighters allow players to move between parallel planes of movement.

Its success led to a wave of other popular fighting games, such as Mortal Kombat by Midway Games, Fatal Fury: King of Fighters ( 1992 ) by SNK, Killer Instinct ( 1994 ) by Rare, and The King of Fighters ( 1994 – 2005 ) by SNK.

Since Led Zeppelin dissolved in 1980 with the death of Bonham, Jones has collaborated with a number of artists, including Diamanda Galás, R. E. M., Jars of Clay, Heart, Ben E. Two of the characters from Crystalis are subtle nods to earlier SNK characters who later became part of The King of Fighters series ; the latter two sages, Kensu and Asina, are based on Kensou Sie and Athena Asamiya from the Psycho Soldier arcade game.

In The King of Fighters series, Kensou is well known for his obsession with Athena, a quality demonstrated even in Crystalis.

Only two King of Fighters games were made on the Atomiswave platform ( The King of Fighters Neowave and The King of Fighters XI ) before SNK decided to discontinue using the platform for the series.

Two video games were released for the Game Boy Advance titled The King of Fighters EX: Neo-Blood and The King of Fighters EX2: Howling Blood respectively, featuring characters and backgrounds from KOF ' 99 and 2000, respectively.

During The King of Fighters EX: Neo Blood, Moe Habana, the heir of one of the ten sacred treasures, finds Kyo seriously wounded after his fight against Orochi.

In the two games for the Game Boy Advance titled EX: Neo Blood and EX2, King takes Robert's place in the Art of Fighting Team in the former, and Yuri in the latter.

She appears as an assistant character ( named " Striker ") in The King of Fighters EX for the Art of Fighting Team, and as a playable character along with Ryo and Takuma in The King of Fighters EX2.

SNK also employed a protection on their Neo Geo games starting with The King of Fighters in 1999 which used an encryption algorithm on the graphics ROMs which prevented them from being played in an emulator.

Recognizing that he is " the most important character in the series ", designer Kyle Mannerberg named several parallels and influences concerning his development up to that point, citing Neo and John Murdoch ( the protagonists of The Matrix and Dark City respectively ), the archetypal Fisher King of Arthurian legend, the story of Oedipus, and Gnostic myth as inspirations ( with both latter sources being reaffirmed as strong influences by Hennig in a later interview ).

She is also a playable character in the fighting games SNK Gals ' Fighters ( 2000 ) and NeoGeo Battle Coliseum ( 2005 ), in the shooting games The King of Fighters Sky Stage and Neo Geo Heroes: Ultimate Shooting ( 2010 ), in the quiz game Quiz King of Fighters ( 1995 ), in the PC game King of Fighters Online, and in the mobile games SNK Beach Volley ～ GAL ' S ATTACK ～ and Neo Geo Tennis Coliseum ,< ref name =" snkbvga ">

Iori also appears as a sub-boss during The King of Fighters Ex: Neo Blood, which is situated after his fight against Orochi.

For the special endings in The King of Fighters ' 97, three video games journals, Gamest, Famitsu and Neo Geo Freak, had to create a team composed of three characters from the game so that they would be featured in an image after passing the arcade mode.

This included licensing out popular IP to other companies ( Metal Slug series, The King of Fighters series, Sengoku series ), closing underperforming divisions, discontinuing distribution outside of Japan, ending support for the Neo Geo arcade platform and selling off warehoused inventory.

The game was produced for Irem by Takashi Nishiyama, who also created Irem's arcade-hit Moon Patrol, and later designed the original Street Fighter at Capcom before leaving to run SNK's videogame development division, creating the Neo Geo arcade system board and its games like Fatal Fury: King of Fighters, Art of Fighting, The King of Fighters ' 94, and Samurai Shodown there, as well as several of their successors.
