A letter to his wife, dated February 11, 1834, is on display at the Alamo.

In an 1834 letter to Professor Benjamin Silliman Morey writes, “ It is now more than twenty years since I have been in the constant, I may say daily practice of making experiments on the decomposition of water, by mixing with its vapor that of spirits of turpentine, and a great portion of atmospheric air .” This would seem to understate the scope of some research that led to such diverse discoveries as the liquid fueled internal combustion engine, a method for carbonating water, and odd bubbles formed by molten resin.

In May 1834, Mackenzie published a letter from British Reformer Joseph Hume in the pages of the Advocate in which Hume called for independence for the colonies, even by means of violent rebellion if necessary.

In another letter from 7 January 1834, when he had received more information on what had happened, a change of mind announces itself: he would later advocate the position that Hauser himself had inflicted the wound by pressure, and that, after he had squeezed the point of the knife through his wadded coat, it had penetrated much deeper than he had intended.

This letter was forwarded to the Mexican government and Austin was imprisoned in early 1834.

Other works include: De Pentateuchi Samaritana origine, indole, et auctoritate ( 1815 ), supplemented in 1822 and 1824 by the treatise De Samaritanorum theologia, and by an edition of Carmina Samaritana ; Paläographische Studien über phönizische u. punische Schrift ( 1835 ), a pioneering work which he followed up in 1837 by his collection of Phoenician monuments ( Scripturae linguaeque Phoeniciae monumenta quotquot supersunt ); an Aramaic lexicon ( 1834 – 1839 ); and a treatise on the Old South Arabian language, then called Himyarite, written in conjunction with Rödiger in 1841.
