United won the League championship but were denied the 20th century's first " double " when they controversially lost the 1957 FA Cup final to Aston Villa.

Yet somehow they reached their second consecutive FA Cup final, and the big day at Wembley coincided with Busby's return to work.

Further success with Manchester United came at last when they beat Leicester City 3 – 1 in the FA Cup final of 1963, with Charlton finally earning a winners ' medal in his third final.

After World War II, the club reached the FA Cup Final twice, losing in 1946 and winning in 1947.

Charlton were finalists in the 1946 FA Cup, but lost 4 – 1 to Derby County.

But they made amends with their performance in the FA Cup, reaching the final once again.

In 1987 Charlton also returned to Wembley for the first time since the 1947 FA Cup final for the Full Members Cup final against Blackburn.

Charlton continued their poor run of form to go 18 games without a win, a new club record, before finally achieving a 1 – 0 away victory over Norwich City in an FA Cup Third Round replay.

In 1938 the highest attendance to date at the ground was recorded at over 75, 000 for a FA Cup match against Aston Villa.

In the 1940s, Charlton used a design featuring a robin sitting in a football within a shield, sometimes with the letters CAFC in the four quarters of the shield, which was worn for the 1946 FA Cup Final.

They reached the 1915 FA Cup Final, where they lost to Sheffield United at Old Trafford, and finished 3rd in the First Division in 1920, the club's best league campaign to that point.

The following season saw UEFA create the European Champions ' Cup, but after objections from The Football League and the FA Chelsea were persuaded to withdraw from the competition before it started.

They were on course for a treble of League, FA Cup and League Cup going into the final stages of the 1964 – 65 season, winning the League Cup but faltering late on in the other two.

In three seasons the side were beaten in three major semi-finals and were FA Cup runners-up.

Under Docherty's successor, Dave Sexton, Chelsea won the FA Cup in 1970, beating Leeds United 2 – 1 in a final replay.

Chelsea's form in the new Premier League was unconvincing, although they did reach the 1994 FA Cup Final.

He added several top international players to the side, as the club won the FA Cup in 1997 and established themselves as one of England's top sides again.

Gullit was replaced by Gianluca Vialli, who led the team to victory in the League Cup Final and the Cup Winners ' Cup Final in 1998, the FA Cup in 2000 and their first appearance in the UEFA Champions League.

Chelsea declined as a major force thereafter, but Osgood continued to score regularly ; his volley from outside the area against Arsenal in the FA Cup quarter-final was voted goal of the season in 1972 – 73.

In the 2010 – 11 FA Cup, Reading reached the quarter-final, where they lost 1 – 0 to Manchester City at the City of Manchester Stadium, Reading eventually finished 5th in the Championship to qualify for the division's play-offs.

They also reached an FA Cup quarter-final 1987 and in 1998 won the Auto Windscreens Shield and the second division play-off final.

* 1998 – The club reached the FA Cup quarter-final but were denied a semi-final appearance as Sheffield United ( a league below them ) won the replay at Bramall Lane on penalties.

* 2009 – The first ever complete sell-out of the Ricoh Arena was announced for the FA Cup quarter-final match against Chelsea on 7 March 2009 which Chelsea won 2 – 0.

Notts County were relegated three seasons later, but not before reaching the FA Cup quarter-final, which they lost to Everton.

A famous 1 – 0 victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup booked them a place in the quarter-final, which they lost to eventual winners Tottenham Hotspur.

They reached the last 16 of the FA Cup twice, and the quarter-final of the Football League Cup once, in 1968.

Given overtook Alan Shearer as having played in the most European matches for the club on 16 September 2004 in a game against Bnei Sakhnin, and Given's 12 European and 3 FA Cup appearances helped Newcastle reach the UEFA Cup quarter-final and the FA Cup semi-final.

The all-time attendance record at the Hawthorns was set on 6 March 1937, when 64, 815 spectators crammed in to see Albion beat hot-favourites Arsenal 3 – 1 in the FA Cup quarter-final.

He scored two goals to help Chelsea to a quarter-final draw with Tottenham Hotspur after having trailed 3 – 1, and he was named the FA Cup player-of-the-round for his performance.

He scored the opener and set up one for John Terry in a 2 – 0 win against Stoke City in the FA Cup quarter-final.

Moore made his competitive Newcastle United debut on 22 March 2006 against Chelsea in the FA Cup quarter-final, becoming the first Australian to play for the magpies.

Saha came off the bench at half-time in that season's FA Cup quarter-final against Middlesbrough, scoring the winner and helping Everton reach the semi-finals for the first time since 1995.

On 13 March 2011, Khizanishvili completed the full 90 minutes against Manchester City at Eastlands in a 1-0 FA Cup quarter-final loss.

Later in the season, Nayim scored a hat-trick in the FA Cup quarter-final at Manchester City, helping them to a 4 – 2 success.

He made his first start at Old Trafford since his injury on 19 March 2007 in an FA Cup quarter-final replay win against Middlesbrough.

Going into late February, Arsenal were still in contention for the quadruple, but within a span of two weeks they lost in the League Cup final, were eliminated by Barcelona in the Round of 16 of the Champions League, and defeated in the FA Cup quarter-final.

He scored 21 goals in the English First Division 1999 – 2000 season for the Trotters and helped them to the semi-finals of both the FA Cup and League Cup, including scoring the only goal in a tense FA Cup quarter-final game against Charlton Athletic.

His next Chelsea goals came after scoring twice and also assisting two others against Championship side Leicester City in an FA Cup quarter-final on 18 March 2012, ending a goal drought that stretched 24 games.

In all he made 26 appearances in the league, and three in the FA Cup during the clubs run to the quarter-final.
