Thompson continued working for the Hudson's Bay Company until May 23, 1797 when, frustrated with the Hudson's Bay Company's policies, he left and walked 80 miles in the snow to enter the employ of the competition, the North West Company where he continued to work as a fur trader and surveyor.

A work of romantic fiction, Sense and Sensibility is set in southwest England between 1792 and 1797, and portrays the life and loves of the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne.

This folly was then embellished upon by John Robison ( 1739 – 1805 ), a professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh, in an anti-Masonic work published in 1797.
