According to author H. Reid in his 1961 book The Virginian Railway, investors recalled the rapid growth of Roanoke between 1882 and 1884, which had been nicknamed the " Magic City " when the Norfolk and Western ( N & W ) had established major facilities at the former bucolic location which had been earlier known as Big Lick.

When the VGN lost its identity upon purchase by the Norfolk & Western in 1959, author and photographer H. Reid wrote the epic book " The Virginian Railway " and stated " There will always be a Virginian.

As in the book, the foreman went only by the name " The Virginian.

* Hubert Skidmore, a West Virginian, immortalized the tragic events from the common man's perspective in his book Hawk's Nest which followed the fictional accounts of several tunnel workers and their families.

At least one line in the C. S. Lewis book The Last Battle implies that Lewis learned of Narnia's events-and thus wrote the Narnia books-after the Railway Accident in 1949, when Susan told him the stories in the belief that she was relating mere childhood make-believe.

The Culdee Fell Railway is featured in the book Mountain Engines, part of The Railway Series by Rev. W. Awdry.

The Railway Children is a children's book by Edith Nesbit, originally serialised in The London Magazine during 1905 and first published in book form in 1906.

In Christopher Awdry's book " Thomas & Victoria ", the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway is featured as the railway where Victoria worked before coming to Sodor.
