In this cycle, there are no fewer than twenty-one portraits of the Tornabuoni and Tornaquinci families – in the Angel appearing to Zacharias, portraits of Politian, Marsilio Ficino and others ; in the Salutation of Anna and Elizabeth, the beautiful Giovanna Tornabuoni ( identified ( incorrectly ) by Giorgio Vasari as Ginevra de Benci ); in the Expulsion of Joachim from the Temple, Sebastiano Mainardi and Alessio Baldovinetti ( some art historians have surmised that the latter figure may be the likeness of Ghirlandaio's father ).

Other highlights include works by the most famous Renaissance and Baroque painters, including Titian, Sebastiano del Piombo, Caravaggio, Rubens, Van Dyck, Murillo, Rembrandt and Frans Hals and wonderful portraits by Domenico Ghirlandaio and Vittore Carpaccio.

The most important works include Maso di Banco's Coronation of the Virgin, Sassetta's Saint Thomas Aquinas at Prayer, Domenico Ghirlandaio's Saint Stephen Martyr, Gentile Bellini's Portrait of Caterina Cornaro, Giorgione's Portrait of a Young Man, Raphael's Esterhazy Madonna, Correggio's Madonna and Child with an Angel, three works by Sebastiano del Piombo, Bronzino's Adoration of the Shepherds as well as his Venus, Cupid and Jealousy, Titian's Portrait of Doge Marcantonio Trevisani, Tintoretto's Supper at Emmaus, Tiepolo's St James the Greater in the Battle of Clavijo, Dürer's Portrait of a Young Man, Bernard van Orley's Portrait of Emperor Charles V, eight pictures by Lucas Cranach the Elder, Pieter Bruegel the Elder's St John the Baptist Preaching, Rubens's Mucius Scaevola Before Porsenna, two excellent portraits by Frans Hals, and a particularly strong collection of works by Spanish masters including El Greco, Velázquez and Goya.

His realist portraits — e. g. of Franz Liszt and Cardinal Haynald — were also born around this time.

Among the crayon portraits were Cardinal Newman ( 1844 ), John Keble, Henry Hallam ( 1843 ), Charlotte Brontë ( 1850 ), Elizabeth Gaskell ( 1851 ), Lord Macaulay ( 1844 and 1850 ), Sir Charles Lyell ( 1853 ), Michael Faraday ( 1852 ), and Lord Lyndhurst ( 1847 ).

In the National Portrait Gallery are portraits by him of Lord Sidmouth ( watercolour ); Lord-chancellors Cranworth and Hatherley, Baron Cleasby and Lord Cardwell ( oil paintings ); Samuel Rogers, the poet, and John Keble ( crayon drawings ), both bequeathed by the painter ; besides drawings, purchased in July 1896, of Earl Canning, Viscount Hill, Sir George Cornewall Lewis, Canon Liddon, Archbishop Longley, Sir Charles Lyell, Cardinal Newman, Dr. Pusey, Sir Gilbert Scott, Sir Robert Harry Inglis, and Bishop Wilberforce.

Among his principal works are portraits of: Lincoln ( Corcoran Gallery ), Bishop ( later Cardinal ) McClosky ( bishop's residence, Albany ), Guizot ( 1841, in Smithsonian Institution ), Audubon ( 1838, Boston Soc.

Among his sitters for portraits were Marie de Medicis and Cardinal Mazarin, but these works seem to have disappeared.

Among other portraits of his latter years were a memorial portrait of the Earl of Iddesleigh, of which he painted a replica for the National Portrait Gallery, portraits of Cardinal Manning ( perhaps his best effort in this line ), Samuel Cousins, Sir Edmund Henderson and others.

A full-length portrait of Russell was painted in 1902 by the Swiss-born American artist Adolfo Müller-Ury ( 1862 – 1947 ) who also painted another oval half-length, but both portraits are missing.

The artist John Singer Sargent painted two portraits of Mitchell, one is in the collection of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, the other, commissioned by the Mutual Assurance Company of Philadelphia in 1902, was recently sold ( see External Links, below ).

Pierre Paul Puget ( 1620 – 1694 ), born in Marseille, was a painter of portraits and religious scenes, but was better known for his sculptures, found in Toulon Cathedral, outside the city hall of Toulon, and in the Louvre.

Inside the church are the tombs of Luther and Philipp Melanchthon, and of the electors Frederick the Wise ( by Peter Vischer the Younger, 1527 ) and John the Constant ( by Hans Vischer ), and portraits of the reformers by Lucas Cranach the Younger.

By now, to keep up with the demand for replicas of his portraits, he was making use of studio assistants, most notable of whom would be William Etty and George Henry Harlow.

Two of Lawrence's most famous portraits of children were painted during the 1820s: that of Emily and Laura Calmady and that of Master Charles William Lambton, painted for his father Lord Durham for 600 guineas and known as The Red Boy.

The state of New Jersey sent a constable to her home on January 18, 1858 and some of her furniture was taken outside and auctioned off, starting with a marble table and two steel-plate portraits, one of William Lloyd Garrison and the other of Ohio Governor Salmon P. Chase.

The pair wed on June 22, 1749, and were preserved together in several portraits, including one by William Hogarth.

As in Colonial America, many of the painters who specialized in portraits were essentially self-taught ; notable among them are Joseph Badger, John Brewster, Jr., and William Jennys.

Many of these works were portraits of Elizabeth Siddal, Jane Morris and William Holman Hunt's muse Annie Miller.
