** The ACT ( Australian Capital Territory ) Legislative Assembly meets for the first time.

The ACT Legislative Assembly then officially adopted this flag in 1993.

Carnell was elected to the second ACT Legislative Assembly in 1992, and became Leader of the Opposition in 1993, succeeding Trevor Kaine.

Humpries was elected to the unicameral ACT Legislative Assembly at the 1989 election.

Reid formally resigned on 14 February 2003, and Humphries was elected by the ACT Legislative Assembly on 18 February to fill the casual vacancy.

The Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly ( formally, the Legislative Assembly for the Australian Capital Territory ) is the unicameral legislature of the Australian Capital Territory ( ACT ).

Instead of vice-regal or regal assent, a Bill passed by the ACT Legislative Assembly is enacted on ‘ notification ’— publication of a notice authorised by the Chief Minister, in the Government Gazette.

As with the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly, the ACT Legislative Assembly lacks the full powers of a state legislature.

When a Senate seat representing the Australian Capital Territory ( ACT ) or the Northern Territory ( NT ) becomes vacant, the replacement senator is chosen by the ACT Legislative Assembly or the NT Legislative Assembly, under section 44 of the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918.

This process was used for the first time on 18 February 2003, when Gary Humphries was chosen by the ACT Legislative Assembly to replace Margaret Reid, who had resigned from the Senate on 14 February.

In the fall of 2011 the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools-Commission on Colleges gave approval for the University of New Orleans to join the University of Louisiana System, concluding the five-month transition from the LSU System since ACT 419 of the 2011 Louisiana Legislative Regular Session was signed into law in July 2011.

Follett resigned from the ACT Legislative Assembly in December 1996 and was replaced by Simon Corbell.

Dundas worked as an organiser for the Community and Public Sector Union for several months in 2001, before gaining the top position on the Democrat ticket for the seat of Ginninderra in the ACT Legislative Assembly.

In her one term in the Legislative Assembly, she was a strong advocate for environmental causes, both inside the ACT, such as the preservation of the Black Mountain area ( which had been threatened by the Gungahlin Drive Extension ), and outside, such as her attempts to save Tasmania's environmentally sensitive Tarkine wilderness area from logging and development.

The title is conferred under Standing Order 5A of the ACT Legislative Assembly, that the Leader of the Opposition shall be the leader of the largest non-Government party, with the consent of that member.

Although the ACT has its own Chief Minister and its own legislature ( the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly ), the Federal Parliament retains the right to overrule ACT legislation.

While governing the entire ACT, the Legislative Assembly also acts as a municipal government for the city of Canberra.

The ACT Chief Minister ( currently Katy Gallagher, Australian Labor Party ) is elected by members of the ACT Assembly.

However, reserve powers analogous to those vested in a State Governor are vested by the Act in the Federal Minister for Territories, who may, for example, dissolve the ACT Assembly in cases of corruption or deadlock.

In the ACT House of Assembly mid-1982 election, 25 % of voters wrote " No Dams " on their ballot paper.

The group was set up in 1993 after a meeting in Canberra convened by Michael Moore ( Australian politician ) ( ACT Assembly ) and Ann Symonds ( MLC, NSW ).

Where the Assembly is not in session, the choice is made by the Chief Minister of the ACT or the Administrator of the NT, as the case may be.

On March 20, 1924 the Virginia General Assembly passed two laws that had arisen out of contemporary concerns about eugenics and race: SB 219, entitled " The Racial Integrity Act " and SB 281, " An ACT to provide for the sexual sterilization of inmates of State institutions in certain cases ", henceforth referred to as " The Sterilization Act ".

The ACT is bounded by the Goulburn-Cooma railway line in the east, the watershed of Naas Creek in the south, the watershed of the Cotter River in the west, and the watershed of the Molonglo River in the north-east.

The ACT also has a small strip of territory around the southern end of the Beecroft Peninsula, which is the northern headland of Jervis Bay.

The ACT Government is a member of the Council of Australian Governments.

The Crown is represented by the Governor-General in the government of the ACT.

In Australia's Federal Parliament, the ACT is represented by four federal members: two members of the House of Representatives ; the Division of Fraser and the Division of Canberra and is one of only two territories to be represented in the Senate, with two Senators ( the other being the Northern Territory ).

The ACT retains a small area of territory on the coast on the Beecroft Peninsula, consisting of a strip of coastline around the northern headland of Jervis Bay ( not to be confused with the Jervis Bay Territory, which is on the southern headland of the Bay ).

The ACT's land on the Beecroft Peninsula is an " exclave ", that is, an area of territory not physically connected to the main part of the ACT.

Interestingly, this ACT exclave surrounds a small exclave of NSW territory, namely the Point Perpendicular lighthouse which is at the southern tip of the Beecroft Peninsula.

This is a geographic curiosity: an exclave of NSW land enclosed by an exclave of ACT land.

The average level of degree qualification in the ACT is higher than the national average.

All land in the ACT is held on 99 year leases from the national government, although most leases are now administered by the Territory government.

The ACT public education system schooling is normally split up into Pre-School, Primary School ( K-6 ), High School ( 7 – 10 ) and College ( 11 – 12 ) followed by studies at university or TAFE.

) The ACT requires the referee to cross-reference the difficulty of a character action with the ability score used to complete that action, determining which column of the ACT is used for that action.

Demonstrated ability in reading, mathematics, and writing, as typically measured in the United States by the SAT or similar tests such as the ACT, have often replaced colleges individual entrance exams, and is often required for admission to higher education.

At some campuses, such as Santa Barbara, San Diego, and Santa Cruz, a point system is used to weight grade point average, SAT Reasoning or ACT scores, and SAT Subject scores, while at Davis, Berkeley, Irvine, and Los Angeles, academic achievement is examined in the context of the school and the surrounding community.

Average ACT score is 22 ; average high school grade point average is 2. 94 ; tuition for 2009-2010 is $ 22, 350, with 100 percent of UIU students receiving need-and / or merit-based financial aid.
