Creator of the Argentine Navy ( Armada de la República Argentina, ARA ) and leader of the Argentine Armed Forces in the wars against Brazil and Spain, he was born in Foxford, County Mayo on June 22, 1777 and died in Buenos Aires in 1857.

These became famous during the Falklands War when an Argentine Exocet missile sank a Royal Navy destroyer.

On 14 December 1975, using the same techniques, Montoneros frogmen placed explosives on the naval yacht Itati in an attempt to kill the Commander-in-Chief of the Argentine Navy, Admiral Emilio Massera.

It has contributed to United Nations peacekeeping operations worldwide, with Argentine soldiers / engineers and police / Gendarmerie serving in El Salvador – Honduras – Nicaragua ( where Navy patrol boats painted white were deployed ), Guatemala, Ecuador – Peru, Western Sahara, Angola, Kuwait, Cyprus, Croatia, Kosovo, Bosnia and East Timor.

Argentina, through its Coast Guard and Navy, has been traditionally great involved in fishery protection in the Argentine Sea with the first major incidents tracing back to the 1960s when a destroyer fired and holed a Russian trawler and continued through recent years.

Corporals in the Argentine military are considered suboficiales subalternos ( subaltern sub-officers / lower non-commissioned officers ), superior only to all ranks of Volunteers ( enlisted members of the Army and Air Force ) and Seamen ( enlisted members of the Navy ).

The highest rank is theoretically captain-general, but it is not used in deference of liberator José de San Martín, the first and only captain general of the Argentine army.

While the Argentine Navy has three Corporal ranks, from junior to senior: Cabo Segundo ( Corporal Second Class ), Cabo Primero ( Corporal First Class ) and Cabo Principal ( Principal Corporal ), which is equal to the Army rank of Sargento ( Sergeant ).

The rank is also used by the Argentine National Gendarmerie and the Argentine Federal Police, which use the rank in the same manner as the Army, as well as the Argentine Naval Prefecture.

Argentine Marines have the same rank insignia and titles as the rest of the Navy and they are currently deployed abroad on UN mandates.

In the Argentine Air Force commodoro ( commodore ) is the rank in Argentine Spanish while in the Chilean Air Force, the rank in Chilean Spanish is colonel de aviacion or " colonel of aviation ".

He was among the signatories to the Cabildo abierto that voted in favor of Independence on May 22, 1810, and fought during the Argentine War of Independence in various auxiliary posts, reaching the rank of Colonel in 1815.
