According to DS9 writer / producer Robert Hewitt Wolfe, after having previously been treated as red herrings since their first mention on Next Generation, and as a running joke by the production staff because " they were these people who were out there who were dangerous but were never really responsible for any of the trouble going on ", they would finally be used as the villains in an episode.

The lead ship of her class and one of the Federation's first purpose-built warships, the Defiant first appears in the DS9 episode " The Search, Part I ", after which it plays a significant role throughout the series in the ensuing Dominion War.

In the DS9 episode " Shattered Mirror ", a Mirror Universe version of the Defiant is seen, constructed by the Terran Rebellion.

According to Deep Space Nine episode " The Abandoned ", this ability is a part of their integrated biology-in the DS9 episodes " Hippocratic Oath " and " Rocks and Shoals ", Jem ' Hadar who are suffering from Ketracel White withdrawal lose their ability to shroud.

However, according to DS9 episode " One Little Ship ", in the case of " Alphas " ( Jem ' Hadar bred in the Alpha Quadrant and designed specifically for combat there ), the Founders decided to dismiss this ritual.
