* In the manga / anime Gintama, the main character, Gintoki Sakata, wields a bokken as opposed to a katana, as the story takes place in an Edo period of an alternate timeline where a weapons ban has been imposed by imperialistic aliens.

These came from Buddhist beliefs ; the classical Chinese elements (, go gyô ) are also prominent in Japanese culture, especially to the influential Neo-Confucianists during the Edo period.

Edo period Japanese ( samurai ) chain armour or kusari gusoku

Kusari gusoku or chain armour was commonly used during the Edo period 1603 to 1868 as a stand alone defence.

Ian Bottomley in his book " Arms and Armor of the Samurai: The History of Weaponry in Ancient Japan " shows a picture of a kusari armour and mentions kusari katabira ( chain jackets ) with detachable arms being worn by samurai police officials during the Edo period.

During the Edo period there were about 100 fires ( most begun by accident, often quickly escalating and spreading through neighbourhoods of wooden machiya which were heated with charcoal fires.

During the Edo period, the shogunate appointed administrators ( machi bugyō ) with jurisdiction over the police and ( beginning with the rule of Tokugawa Yoshimune ) the fire department ( machibikeshi ).

Some shops in the streets near the temple have existed continuously in the same location since the Edo period.

Modern Japanese is considered to begin with the Edo period in 1600.

However, during the Edo period, Edo ( now Tokyo ) developed into the largest city in Japan, and Edo Tokyo dialect became the Standard Japanese position.

In Japanese, the scabbard for a nihontō is referred to as a saya, and the handguard piece, often intricately designed as an individual work of art — especially in later years of the Edo period — was called the tsuba.

The daishō was the symbolic armament of the Edo period samurai.

1300 CE, made ō-suriage ( greatly shortened ) during the Edo period for use as a " katana " by cutting off the original nakago and reforming it higher up the cutting edge.

As the Edo period progressed, blade quality declined, though ornamentation was refined.

By 1617 the village came under the control of the Ikeda clan, which controlled Hiezu as part of the Tottori Domain through the Edo period ( 1603 – 1868 ).

Edo grew from what had been a small, little-known fishing village in 1457 to a metropolis with an estimated population of 1, 000, 000 by 1721 ( the largest city in the world at the time ).

It was this extensive samurai ( noble warrior class ) population which defined the character of Edo, particularly in contrast to the two major cities of Kyoto and Osaka ( neither of which were ruled by a daimyō or had a significant samurai population ).

In Japan, the same period marks the formation of the modern forms of judo, jujitsu, karate, and kendo ( among others ) based on revivals of old schools of Edo period martial arts which had been suppressed during the Meiji Restoration.

During the Edo period in Japan peasants were not allowed to eat meat and had a diet of primarily rice and soy beans to get their protein.

There was a striking contrast with Japan, where Edo ( Tokyo ) had as many as 1 million inhabitants and the urban population comprised as much as 10 % to 15 % of the total during the Tokugawa Period ( 1600 – 1868 ).

By the mid 18th century, this form of sushi had reached Edo ( contemporary Tokyo ).

He had also adopted the name he would most widely be known by, Katsushika Hokusai, the former name referring to the part of Edo where he was born and the latter meaning, ' north studio '.

From the shugo of the Muromachi period through the Sengoku to the daimyo of the Edo period, the rank had a long and varied history.

To further dramatize the new order, the capital was relocated from Kyoto, where it had been situated since 794, to Tokyo ( Eastern Capital ), the new name for Edo.

With Japan divided into individual territories ( Han ) with the restrictions on travel already in place under Toyotomi Hideyoshi and strengthened afterwards by the successive Tokugawa governments of the Edo period ( 1600-1868 approximately ) provided a fertile ground for the development of formalized methods of tying prisoners who had to be transported across territories because of measures then in place mandating that a prisoner had to be handed off from one set of officials to another at the border of each territory with each law-enforcement group employing a different school ’ s or region ’ s often jealously-guarded methodology.

Though the Tokugawa forces had a distinct advantage in numbers, Yoshinobu abandoned his army in the midst of the fight once he realized the Satsuma and Choshu forces raised the Imperial banner, and escaped to Edo.

He maintained 2. 5 million koku of land, new headquarters at Edo, a strategically situated castle town ( the future Tokyo ), and also had an additional two million koku of land and thirty-eight vassals under his control.

He wanted to make Edo a major port, but once he learned that the Europeans favored ports in Kyūshū and that China had rejected his plans for official trade, he moved to control existing trade and allowed only certain ports to handle specific kinds of commodities.

During the Edo Period these tales had been adapted by professional writers and woodblock-printed in a form a called kusazōshi ( cf. chapbooks ), but a number of local variant versions of the tales have been collected in the field as well.

The daimyo of Akō had removed his dagger from its scabbard within Edo Castle, and for that offense, he was ordered to kill himself by committing seppuku.

Classical Japanese literature was written in the archaic Kansai dialect and it had an influence on all of the nation including the Edo dialect, the predecessor of modern Tokyo dialect.

But by the Edo period the yari had fallen into disuse: with the greater emphasis on small-scale close quarters combat and the convenience of swords ( as opposed to long battlefield weapons ), polearms and archery lost their practical value.

It has had prototypes since ancient times, and it is said that Shichirin roughly the same as today's were made in the Edo period.

By 1813 he had risen as a “ star ” in the constellation of Edo ’ s artistic world ( a contemporary list of the most important ukiyo-e artists places him in second place behind Toyokuni I ) and until his death in early 1865, Kunisada remained one of the “ trendsetters ” of the Japanese woodblock print.

During the Edo period, the name Echizen was gradually supplanted by Fukui, as it had become known under the Matsudaira as Fukui Domain.

Tokugawa had promised Masamune a one million koku domain, but, even after substantial improvements were made, the land only produced 640, 000 koku, most of which was used to feed the Edo region.

During his stay in Europe, Enomoto had realized that the telegraph would be an important means of communication in the future, and started planning a system to connect Edo and Yokohama.

The Lords of Matsumae, as they are sometimes called, were exempt from owing rice to the shogun in tribute, and from the sankin kotai system established by Tokugawa Ieyasu, under which most lords ( daimyo ) had to spend half the year at court ( in the capital of Edo ).

Tanabu had been the location of a daikansho under the Morioka Domain in the Edo period, and was a resettlement and colonization zone for dispossessed ex-samurai of the defeated Aizu Domain after the Boshin War.
