The Epic of Gilgamesh, an epic poem from Mesopotamia, is amongst the earliest surviving works of literature.

Numerous scholars have drawn attention to various themes, episodes, and verses, that indicate a substantial influence of the Epic of Gilgamesh on both of the epic poems ascribed to Homer.

For example, Gurdjieff claims to have first heard the Epic of Gilgamesh as an oral epic sung from memory by his father ; to have made contact with various ancient brotherhoods including the Sarmoung Brotherhood ; to have copied a map of " pre-sand Egypt "; and to have witnessed a number of miracles and esoteric phenomena.

In 1761 he announced the discovery of an epic on the subject of Fingal ( related to the Irish mythological character Fionn mac Cumhaill / Finn McCool ) written by Ossian ( based on Fionn's son Oisín ), and in December he published Fingal, an Ancient Epic Poem in Six Books, together with Several Other Poems composed by Ossian, the Son of Fingal, translated from the Gaelic Language, written in the musical measured prose of which he had made use in his earlier volume.

Ancient epic poems such as the Epic of Gilgamesh, Homer's Odyssey and the Mahābhārata use similar narrative techniques as modern thrillers.

In this country those who still wrote epic poems, following the rules set by Torquato Tasso in his work Discorsi del poema eroico ( Discussions about the Epic Poems ) and realized in his masterwork, the Jerusalem Delivered, were felt as antiquated.

The Epic of Manas (, ) is a traditional epic poem claimed by the Kyrgyz people dating to the 18th century, though it is possibly much older.

In one of its dozens of iterations, the epic poem consists of approximately 500, 000 lines, and while Kyrgyz historians consider it to be the longest epic poem in history, the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata and the Tibetan Epic of King Gesar are both longer.
