While the region is predominantly French-speaking, it also has two significant minority language communities: the western Flemings, whose presence is evident in the many Dutch placenames in the area and who speak West Flemish, a dialect of Dutch ( perhaps 20, 000 inhabitants of Nord-Pas-de-Calais use Flemish daily and an estimated 40, 000 use it occasionally, both, primarily in and around the arrondissement of Dunkirk ); and the Picards, who speak the Picard language, or Ch ' ti ( speakers, " chitimi ", have been working to revive the nearly-extinct regional speech since the 1980s ).

The daily government is led by the governor, who is appointed by the Flemish government.

Informally, many Mechlinians ( in Dutch Mechelaars and locally pronounced Mecheleirs, people from this city ) daily speak Mechlinian ( in Dutch as well as locally Mechels ), a dialect by Dutch-speakers of Belgium pin-pointingly distincted from other Brabantic dialects by three different vowels of Dutch ( as in zout or rauw, in kei or bijl, in nu ) being typically pronounced as a same vowel – close to the one in English ' raw ' which does not appear in other dialects of the Flemish Region or in standard Dutch.

On Flemish side, under the guidance of Frans Grootjans, Herman Vanderpoorten and Willy De Clercq, the PVV was created, on Walloon side Milou Jeunehomme became the head of the PLP and Brussels got its own but totally disintegrated liberal party landscape.

Bart De Wever chose to remain party leader and appointed Geert Bourgeois and Philippe Muyters as ministers in the Flemish Government and Jan Peumans as speaker of the Flemish parliament.

De facto, appointments tend to respect the almost obsessional balances between the Flemish and French-speaking communities as well as between the ' ministeriable ' political families: mainly Christian-democrats, Socialists, Liberals, also ( moderate ) Nationalists, occasionally an Ecologist ).

Father Ferdinand Verbiest ( 9 October 1623 – 28 January 1688 ) was a Flemish Jesuit missionary in China during the Qing dynasty.
