The Rubinstein variation 4. Bf4 leads to an important choice for White, after 4 ... Nc6 5. Nf3 Bb4 +, between 6. Nbd2 and 6. Nc3.

Similarly, in the Rubinstein variation 3 ... Ng4 4. Bf4 with 4 ... Nc6 5. Nf3 Bb4 + 6. Nc3, after 6 ... Bxc3 + 7. bxc3 White is saddled with doubled pawns in c3 and c4 that limit the scope of his bishop pair.

It occurs in the Rubinstein variation 3 ... Ng4 4. Bf4 with 4 ... Nc6 5. Nf3 Bb4 + 6. Nbd2 Qe7 7. a3.

This move sequence is called the " Rubinstein variation " in reference to the famous game Rubinstein – Vidmar ( Berlin 1918 ) when 4. Bf4 was first employed.

However, he had minus scores against newer players such as Siegbert Tarrasch (+ 5 − 9 = 3 ), Frank Marshall (+ 28 − 34 = 18 ), Akiba Rubinstein (+ 3 − 5 ), Géza Maróczy (+ 5 − 10 = 5 ) and Carl Schlechter (+ 13 − 20 = 13 ).

Similar to 4. Qd4 is 4. Qd5 when after 4 ... Nc6 White can seize the last opportunity to return to calm waters with 5. Bf4 Bb4 + 6. Nc3 which will transpose in the Rubinstein line, or he can try 5. Nf3 d6 6. exd6 Be6 7. d7 + Bxd7 when Black's lead in development compensates for the pawn.

Black can play more aggressively by 4 ... Nd4, the Rubinstein Variation.

Another line, which discourages many ambitious Black players from playing the Rubinstein, is 5. Nxd4 exd4 6. e5 dxc3 7. exf6 Qxf6 ( 7 ... cxd2 +?

Israeli economist Ariel Rubinstein criticised the book for making use of dubious statistics and complained that " economists like Levitt ... have swaggered off into other fields ", saying that the " connection to economics ... none " and that the book is an example of " academic imperialism ".

The play had a 1987 New York revival by Roundabout Theatre at the Union Square Theatre, directed by Robert Carsen and featuring John Wood as the Player, Stephen Lang as Rosencrantz and John Rubinstein as Guildenstern.

Seymour I. Rubinstein was an employee of early microcomputer company IMSAI, where he negotiated software contracts with Digital Research and Microsoft.

After leaving IMSAI, Rubinstein planned to start his own software company that would sell through the newly forming network of retail computer stores.

After Rubinstein obtained a report that discussed the abilities of contemporary standalone word processors from IBM, Xerox, and Wang Laboratories, Barnaby enhanced WordMaster with similar features and support for the CP / M operating system.
