St Thomas Aquinas in the Summa Theologica, II: II Quaestio 25, Article 4 states that we should love our neighbour more than our ourselves.

He was the first Jesuit to teach at the university, where the subject of his course was the Summa Theologica of Thomas Aquinas.

St. Thomas Aquinas, a prominent doctor of the Catholic Church, was the first to write a full treatment of the relationship, differences, and similarities between faith — an intellectual assent — and reason, predominately in his Summa Theologica, De Veritate, and Summa contra Gentiles.

Summa Theologica, written by Thomas Aquinas in the second half of the 13th century, is a series of common questions about Christianity to which he wrote a series of replies.

He attempted to clarify Aquinas's Five Ways ( in the Summa Theologica ) by making a distinction between in fieri causes and in esse causes.

The work for which he is best-known is the Summa Theologica.

He was no longer satisfied with his chair as the means of propagating his ideas, and soon after his return from Bruges he began to express them in tracts and longer works – his great work, the Summa Theologica, was written in support of them.

Physico-theology is the term for a theology based on the constitution of the natural world, especially derived from perceived elements of " design ", which gave rise to the argument from design for the existence of God, beginning with the " fifth way " of the Summa Theologica by Thomas Aquinas ( d. 1274 ).

For instance, the Summa Theologica of Thomas Aquinas ( 1225-1274 ) states that " it is superfluous to suppose that what can be accounted for by a few principles has been produced by many ".

Thomas Aquinas's masterwork, the Summa Theologica, is often seen as the highest fruit of Scholasticism.

His principal theological works are a commentary in three volumes on the Books of the Sentences of Peter Lombard ( Magister Sententiarum ), and the Summa Theologiae in two volumes.

It was once taboo in Western society for women to wear clothing traditionally associated with men, except in certain circumstances such as for necessity ( as per St. Thomas Aquinas's guidelines in Summa Theologiae II ),

At about the same time, the nominalist philosopher William of Ockham argued, in Book I of his Summa Totius Logicae ( Treatise on all Logic, written some time before 1327 ), that Categories are not a form of Being in their own right, but derivative on the existence of individuals.

Several works among the best known during this long period could be cited as an example, from Strabo ( Geography ), Eratosthenes ( Geography ) or Dionisio Periegetes ( Periegesis Oiceumene ) in the Ancient Age to the Alexander von Humboldt ( Cosmos ) in the century XIX, in which geography is regarded as a physical and natural science, of course, through the work Summa de Geografía of Martín Fernández de Enciso from the early sixteenth century, which is indicated for the first time the New World.

The church in Romania and Hungary still looks to the statement of faith, the Summa Universae Theologiae Christianae secundum Unitarios ( 1787 ), though today assent to this is not required.

Socinian theology continued in Transylvania, where Polish exiles such as Andrzej Wiszowaty Jr. taught in the Unitarian College ( 1726 – 1740 ), as evidenced in the Summa Universae Theologiae Christianae secundum Unitarios of Mihály Lombard de Szentábrahám recognized as the statement of faith of the Unitarian Church of Transylvania by Emperor Joseph II in 1782.

In his Summa Theologica ( Part 2-2, Question 148, Article 4 ), St. Thomas Aquinas reiterated the list of five ways to commit gluttony:

Thomas Aquinas taught that souls in Purgatory cannot sin ( Summa Theologica, Second Part of the Second Part, Question 83, Article 11, Reply to Objection 3 ), let alone the saints in heaven.

Dowson is best remembered for some vivid phrases, such as " days of wine and roses " from his poem " Vitae Summa Brevis " ( 1896 ), which appears in the stanza:

This teaching goes back at least to Pope Julius I ( 337 – 352 ), who is quoted in Thomas Aquinas's Summa Theologica as having declared that in case of necessity, but only then, juice pressed from a grape could be used.

He wrote theological treatises, such as his " Summa Fidei Orthodoxæ "; " Compendium Theologicum ", " De Lumine Christianæ Theoriæ ", " De Laudibus B. V. Mariæ ", and " De Præconio B. V. Mariæ " ( in both of which treatises he upholds the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception ), " De quatuor Novissimus ", etc.

By 1415 Pope Martin V affirmed that " the material substance of bread and ... wine longer remain " ( Dz § 581 ), also addressed by St. Thomas in the Summa e. g. III 75 4.

The Summa contra Gentiles is split roughly into two sections, books I-III ( which cover truths that naturally are accessible to the human intellect ), and book IV ( which covers truths for which natural reason is inadequate, like the Trinity, Incarnation, Sacraments, and the Resurrection ).
