One of the forces that worked as an impetus for his pressing forward was the first stirring of what would later be called Romanticism — the Sturm und Drang, or " storm and stress " phase in the arts, a short period where obvious emotionalism was a stylistic preference.

Other theater productions Erdman choreographed during this period include the Helen Hayes Repertory production of Shakespeare's Hamlet ( 1964 ), the Lincoln Center Repertory production of García Lorca's Yerma ( 1962 ) and the New York Shakespeare Festival production of the rock-opera Two Gentleman of Verona ( 1971 ) which ran on Broadway for two years and for which Erdman received the Drama Desk Award and a Tony nomination.

The plays of William Shakespeare were frequently performed on the Broadway stage during the period, most notably by American actor Edwin Booth who was internationally known for his performance as Hamlet.

Wright was the director of the Folger Shakespeare Library, the author of numerous books about the American colonial period, and in 1928 he was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship.
