Matthew Arnold gives a vivid and lengthy description of 1860s Llandudno – and of the ancient tales of Taliesin and Maelgwn Gwynedd that are associated with the local landscape — in the first sections of the preface to On the Study of Celtic Literature ( 1867 ).

In 1867 ( preface signed October 1866 ), Walker published a tunebook entitled Christian Harmony, in which he adopted a seven shape notation.

Kent Bromley, in his preface to Peter Kropotkin's book The Conquest of Bread, considered early French socialist Charles Fourier to be the founder of the libertarian branch of socialist thought, as opposed to the authoritarian socialist ideas of Babeuf and Buonarroti.

Also as a scholar, Arbuthnot took up an interest in antiquities and published Tables of Grecian, Roman, and Jewish measures, weights and coins ; reduced to the English standard in 1705, 1707, 1709, and, expanded with a preface ( which indicated that his second son, Charles, was born in 1705 ), in 1727 and 1747.

The edition of Leers was a reproduction of the work as first printed, with a new preface, notes, and those other writings which had appeared for and against the work up to that date ; it included Simon's answers to criticisms of Charles de Veil and Friedrich Spanheim the Younger.

The ethos Erasmus sets forth within The Education of a Christian Prince ( Institutio principis christiani ), similar to the Isocratean manner of setting himself apart from potentially incompetent teachers, he shows a certain disdain “ against the sophists .” Actually referring to Isocrates, Erasmus, in the preface of Christian Prince and addressing Charles the prince, he states, “ or he was a sophist, instructing some petty king or rather tyrant, and both were pagans ”.

At the conclusion of Christian Prince ’ s preface, Erasmaus, on the basis of “ philosophia Christi ,” admonishes the prince that " mong the countless distinctions which under God your merit will win for you, it will be no small part of your reputation that Charles was a prince to whom a man need hesitate to offer the picture of a true and upright Christian prince without flattery, knowing that he would either gladly accept it as an excellent prince already, or wisely imitate it as a young man always in search of self-improvement ".

The main theme of the novel, according to a preface by Dickens, is selfishness, portrayed in a satirical fashion using all the members of the Chuzzlewit family.

Although Dickens ' original artistic intent was to keep the short stories and the novels together, he himself cancelled Master Humphrey's Clock before 1848, and described in a preface to The Old Curiosity Shop that he wished the story to not be tied down to the miscellany it began within.

As Lawson continued in his 1894 preface: " The same paltry spirit tried to dispose of the greatest of modern short-story writers as ' The Californian Dickens ', but America wasn't built that way – neither was Bret Harte!
