Cheetahs are included on the International Union for Conservation of Nature ( IUCN ) list of vulnerable species ( African subspecies threatened, Asiatic subspecies in critical situation ) as well as on the US Endangered Species Act: threatened species-Appendix I of CITES ( Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species ).

The subspecies is named after I. R. P. Heslop, who claimed in 1945 to have shot a pygmy hippo in the Niger Delta region and collected several skulls.

There are two subspecies, I. io caucasica ( Jachontov, 1912 ) found in Azerbaijan and ' I.

The subspecies of the Caribbean coast of Mexico, I. s. fuertesi, is sometimes considered a separate species, the Ochre Oriole.

There are several subspecies, including I. cyanea malayensis from the Malay Peninsula, where the male differs in having the undertail coverts longer, nearly reaching to the tip of the tail.

Together with the other subspecies of the Yellow-crested Cockatoo, it is listed in appendix I of the CITES list.

A. I. Argiropulo, in 1933, changed the name to priority sungorus and united the Djungarian hamster as a subspecies of Phodopus sungorus sungorus with the Campbell's Dwarf Hamster.

In addition to the description above, there are three subspecies ( I. i. icterus, I. i. ridgwayi, and I. i. metai ).

Individuals of I. i. ridgwayi are generally stronger and larger in proportion to the other subspecies.

According to the IOPI ( International Organization for Plant Information ) the status of this plant is still unresolved ; it is often treated as a subspecies of the Dalmatian Iris ( I. pallida ).

A difference between subspecies might explain the great range in size.

It is possible that especially large anacondas will prove to belong to subspecies limited to a small area.

In snakes difference in size is a common characteristic of subspecies.

There are two subspecies: Proteles cristatus cristatus of Southern Africa and Proteles cristatus septentrionalis of East Africa.

Although originally considered a subspecies of A. ramidus, in 2004 anthropologists Yohannes Haile-Selassie, Gen Suwa, and Tim D. White published an article elevating A. kadabba to species level on the basis of newly-discovered teeth from Ethiopia.

The most comprehensive treatment of the family considers 56 species valid, with 18 additional subspecies.

During the Neolithic Revolution, which occurred during the early Holocene, there were at least two aurochs domestication events: one related to the Indian subspecies, leading to Zebu cattle ; the other one related to the Eurasian subspecies, leading to taurine cattle.

The Mexican tetra has been treated as a subspecies of A. fasciatus, the banded tetra, but this is not widely accepted.

It is usually resident all year, except in the coldest parts of its range, and in the case of one subspecies.

Buzzard subspecies fall into two groups.

Adult bears generally weigh between and its largest subspecies, the Kodiak bear, rivals the polar bear as the largest member of the bear family and as the largest land-based predator.

There are several recognized subspecies within the brown bear species.

In North America, two types are generally recognized, the coastal brown bear and the inland grizzly bear, and the two types could broadly define all brown bear subspecies.

The exact number of overall brown subspecies remains in debate.

However, the Californian, North African ( Atlas bear ), and Mexican subspecies were hunted to extinction in the 1870s, 1922, and more recently, respectively, and the not officially recognized Marsican brown bear in central Italy is believed to have a population of just 30 to 40 bears.

Some systems have proposed as many as 90 subspecies, while recent DNA analysis has identified as few as five clades.

DNA analysis recently revealed that the identified subspecies of brown bears, both Eurasian and North American, are genetically quite homogeneous, and that their genetic phylogeography does not correspond to their traditional taxonomy.

As of 2005, 16 subspecies have been recognized.

Bongos are further classified into two subspecies: Tragelaphus eurycerus eurycerus, the lowland or " western bongo ", and the far rarer Tragelaphus eurycerus isaaci, the mountain or " eastern bongo " restricted to north-eastern Central Africa.

Two other subspecies are described from West and Central Africa, but taxonomic clarification is required.

The island ’ s Masked Boobies are of the western Indian Ocean subspecies ( Sula dactylatra melanops ), of which Tromelin is a stronghold.

The Manchurian Wild Boar ( S. s. ussuricus ), the largest subspecies typically weighs between.

* Italian wild boar Sus scrofa majori: A subspecies smaller than S. s. scrofa with a higher and wider skull.

* Indian wild boar Sus scrofa cristatus: A long-maned subspecies with a coat that is brindled black unlike S. s. davidi.

* Sus scrofa affinis: This subspecies is smaller than S. s. cristatus and found in southern India and Sri Lanka.

* Japanese wild boar Sus scrofa leucomystax: A small, almost maneless, yellowish-brown subspecies from Japan ( except Hokkaido where the wild boar is not naturally present, and the Ryuku Islands where replaced by S. s. riukiuanus ).

Two subspecies are recognised: C. s. spilonotus of east Asia, and C. s. spilothorax, of New Guinea and the islands nearby, which is sometimes thought to be a separate species and is often called the Papuan Harrier.

The eastern or Himalayan subspecies, L. s. tricolor, is sometimes called the Black-headed Shrike.

In the dry parts of South Asia and Iran the subspecies C. s. zugmayeri is found and this has a very pale neck collar.

In southern India, the Maldives ( sometimes separated as maledivicus ) and Sri Lanka, the subspecies C. s. protegatus is darker grey.

It has two subspecies: C. s. spilonotus in eastern Asia and C. s. spilothorax ( Papuan Harrier, perhaps a separate species ) in New Guinea.

This has created conservation concerns for relatives of the Mallard, such as the Hawaiian Duck, the A. s. superciliosa subspecies of the Pacific Black Duck, the American Black Duck, the Mottled Duck, Meller's Duck, the Yellow-billed Duck, and the Mexican Duck, in the latter case even leading to a dispute whether these birds should be considered a species ( and thus entitled to more conservation research and funding ) or included in the Mallard.

Subsequent to Loche ’ s first description of a sand cat from Algeria, several subspecies have been described, of which the following are recognized today:

North of the Sahara, it only occurs in Morocco and Algeria, but has now possibly disappeared from the latter country and the subspecies from this region ( L. s. constantina ) is considered endangered under US-ESA.

One researcher has suggested the Javan rhino on Sumatra belonged to a distinct subspecies, R. s.

However, recent genetic studies show one of the subspecies, G. s. marica, is paraphyletic in respect to the other populations of goitered gazelles, although gene introgression is observed in the contact zone between the two species

Two subspecies are found in the southern Appalachians, the Carolina Northern flying squirrel, G. s. coloratus, and the Virginia Northern flying squirrel G. s. fuscus, both of which are endangered, although the Virginia subspecies has recovered enough that it was delisted in August 2008.

In addition to the nominate taxon ( A. s. striatus ), it includes subspecies perobscurus, velox, suttoni, madrensis, fringilloides and venator.

This has also been reflected in recent guides, where A. s. madrensis of southern Mexico is described as being relatively pale below ( compared to more northern subspecies ), but if this is a sign of intergradation with chionogaster or a north-south cline which includes both the members of the nominate group and chionogaster remains unclear.
