* November 8 – A dozen labor leaders come together to announce the creation of the Congress of Industrial Organizations ( CIO ), an organization charged with pushing the cause for industrial unionism.

In the United States, Britain, and ( to a lesser extent ) Australia, the trend toward revolutionary unionism culminated in the growth of the Industrial Workers of the World ( IWW ).

In 1935, eight unions within the AFL organized the Congress of Industrial Organizations ( CIO ) to promote industrial unionism.

The WFM now sought to join with other advocates of industrial unionism and socialism to found a national union federation, the Industrial Workers of the World, in 1905.

Industrial unionism is a labor union organizing method through which all workers in the same industry are organized into the same union — regardless of skill or trade — thus giving workers in one industry, or in all industries, more leverage in bargaining and in strike situations.

Industrial unionism contrasts with craft unionism, which organizes workers along lines of their specific trades, i. e., workers using the same kind of tools, or doing the same kind of work with approximately the same level of skill, even if this leads to multiple union locals ( with different contracts, and different expiration dates ) in the same workplace.

The Congress of Industrial Organizations ( CIO ) primarily practiced a form of industrial unionism prior to its 1955 merger with the American Federation of Labor ( AFL ), which was made up mostly of craft unions.

From the Knights of Labor to the Congress of Industrial Organizations ( CIO ), with all of the industrial unions and federations in between, the nature of union organization has been in contention for a very long time, and the philosophies of industrial unionism are inter-related.

Labor Historian Melvyn Dubofsky traces the birth of the Industrial Workers of the World ( IWW ) to the industrial unionism of the Western Federation of Miners, and their years under fire during the Colorado Labor Wars.

Six weeks after formation of the Asiatic Exclusion League, the Industrial Workers of the World was formed in Chicago, created as a rejection of the narrow craft unionism philosophy of the AFL.

In 1912, William E. Bohn was able to predict about the two foremost examples of industrial unionism then extant, " It is possible that neither the Industrial Workers of the World nor the Detroit I. W. W. will ever become numerically important.

Industrial unionism became even more fierce in the 1930s, when the Great Depression in the United States caused large membership drops in some unions, such as the United Mine Workers of America and the International Ladies ' Garment Workers ' Union.

The AFL was the largest union grouping in the United States for the first half of the 20th century, even after the creation of the Congress of Industrial Organizations ( CIO ) by unions that were expelled by the AFL in 1935 over its opposition to industrial unionism.

The Industrial Union News of the WIIU criticized the structure of the Canadian One Big Union organization, declaring " the O. B. U. seeks to masquerade under the guise of industrial unionism while organized on a territorial plane, without sound foundations and building from the top down.

Craft unionism is perhaps best exemplified by many of the construction unions that formed the backbone of the old American Federation of Labor ( which later merged with the industrial unions of the Congress of Industrial Organizations to form the AFL-CIO ).

The Preamble calls for workers to build an organization of all “ members in any one industry, or in all industries .” Although that sounds a lot like the industrial unionism developed by the Congress of Industrial Organizations, the IWW would oppose John L. Lewis ’ campaign to split from the American Federation of Labor and organize industrial unions in the 1930s.

It, along with the 1934 West Coast Longshore Strike ( led by the Communist Party USA ) and the 1934 Toledo Auto-Lite Strike led by the American Workers Party, were important catalysts for the rise of industrial unionism in the 1930s, much of which was organized through the Congress of Industrial Organizations.

Industrial unionism went one step further, claiming that all workers on one worksite, diggers, plasterers, engine drivers, cleaners, caterers, engineers, accountants and clerks should belong to one union, as part of a " construction industry.

Without increasing amounts of food to feed the increasing city populations the Industrial and Scientific Revolutions could not have proceeded.

The UAW's Executive Board, with the support of the Congress of Industrial Organizations ( CIO ), proceeded to oust Martin, who left to form his own rump version of the UAW.
