While the three propulsion stages were the " muscle " of the Saturn V, the Instrument Unit ( IU ) was the " brains.
The design approach first demonstrated by IBM in 1960 in a small-scale computer was later applied in the Launch Vehicle Digital Computer used in the Instrument Unit that guided all Saturn IB and Saturn V vehicles.
A modified version of the S-IVB, with an in-space restartable J-2, would also be used as the third stage of the Saturn V. It also used a new model of the guidance and control system known as the Instrument Unit, which would also be used on the Saturn V.
The Instrument Unit that would control the launch vehicle arrived October 22, the Command Module arrived three days later and the Service Module on October 27.

The Instrument Unit controlled the ascent of the rocket through the atmosphere, automatically compensating for any winds or loss of thrust during the ascent.

The SLA was composed of four fixed panels bolted to the Instrument Unit on top of the S-IVB stage, which were connected via hinges to four panels which would open from the top similar to flower petals.
After the astronauts docked the CSM to the LM, they blew charges to separate those connections and a guillotine severed the LM to Instrument Unit umbilical.

The Saturn V Instrument Unit is a ring-shaped structure fitted to the top of the Saturn V rocket's third stage ( S-IVB ) and the Saturn IB's second stage ( S-IVB ).
The Instrument Unit contains the guidance system for the Saturn V rocket.
Some of the electronics contained within the Instrument Unit are a digital computer, analog flight control computer, emergency detection system, inertial guidance platform, control accelerometers and control rate gyros.
NASA's contractor to construct the Saturn V Instrument Unit was International Business Machines ( IBM ).
There was no Instrument Unit for Saturn I Block I boosters ( SA-1 to SA-4 ).
It also built the ST-124-M3 inertial platform used in the Saturn V Instrument Unit which was built by the Navigation and Control Division in Teterboro, NJ.
