In many European countries the word " InterCity " or " Inter-City " is an official brand name for a network of regular-interval, relatively long-distance train services that meet certain criteria of speed and comfort.

The running of express passenger services on the WCML came under the Inter-City brand in the late 1960s, which following the " sectorisation " of British Rail in the 1980s became known as " InterCity West Coast ".

The new management structure was based on business sectors rather than geographical regions, and first manifested itself in 1982 with the creation of Railfreight, the BRB's freight operation, and InterCity, though the Inter-City branding had been carried on coaching stock since the early 1970s.

The ICN ( InterCity Neigezug, or InterCity Tilting Train ) was made by Bombardier, including a tilting-system designed by SIG ( today ALSTOM ).

Until 2002, the Austrian Federal Railways InterCity service IC 535 from Wien Südbahnhof to Graz was named " Romy Schneider ".
