* Windows Media Player applets, used to display embedded video files in Internet Explorer ( and other browsers that support the plugin )

Because of a known vulnerability in older versions of Internet Explorer, some e-mail programs, such as Microsoft's Outlook Express and Microsoft Outlook programs, may install and execute the worm as soon as the e-mail message is viewed.

These include the World Wide Web Consortium's Resource Description Framework ( RDF ) as well as Platform for Internet Content Selection ( PICS ) labels used by Microsoft's Internet Explorer Content Advisor.

In Microsoft Office 2007 and later versions, Internet Explorer 7 and later versions and Windows Live Messenger, ClearType is also turned on by default, even if it is not enabled throughout the operating system.

Internet Explorer represents a notable exception: versions up to IE 3. x cache DNS records for 24 hours by default.

Internet Explorer 4. x and later versions ( up to IE 8 ) decrease the default time out value to half an hour, which may be changed in corresponding registry keys.

One can render this in an XML-enabled browser ( such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox ) by pasting and saving the DTD component above to a text file named example. dtd and the XML file to a differently-named text file, and opening the XML file with the browser.

The history of the Document Object Model is intertwined with the history of the " browser wars " of the late 1990s between Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer, as well as with that of JavaScript and JScript, the first scripting languages to be widely implemented in the layout engines of web browsers.

Netscape's competitor, Microsoft, released Internet Explorer 3. 0 later the same year with a port of JavaScript called JScript.

In 1997, Netscape and Microsoft released version 4. 0 of Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer respectively, adding support for Dynamic HTML ( DHTML ), functionality enabling changes to a loaded HTML document.

Internet Explorer continues to support its Intermediate DOM for backward compatibility.

Non-conformant browsers such as Internet Explorer 4. x and Netscape 4. x were still widely used as late as 2000.

By 2005, large parts of W3C DOM were well-supported by common ECMAScript-enabled browsers, including Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6 ( 2001 ), Opera, Safari and Gecko-based browsers ( like Mozilla, Firefox, SeaMonkey and Camino ).

Some layout engines such as Trident / MSHTML and Presto are associated primarily or exclusively with a particular browser such as Internet Explorer and Opera respectively.

Development became easier when Internet Explorer 5. 0 +, Mozilla Firefox 2. 0 +, and Opera 7. 0 + adopted a shared DOM.

Internet Explorer slows down GIFs if the frame-rate is 20 frames per second or higher and Microsoft reports that Google Chrome and Safari also slow down some GIF animations.

Notably, Internet Explorer versions 6, 7, and 8 report deflate support but do not actually accept RFC 1950 format, making actual use of deflate highly unusual.

By March 1996, pre-standard HTTP / 1. 1 was supported in Arena, Netscape 2. 0, Netscape Navigator Gold 2. 01, Mosaic 2. 7, Lynx 2. 5, and in Internet Explorer 2. 0.

However, in the case of free certificate authorities such as CACert, popular browsers ( e. g. Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer ) may not include the trusted root certificates, which may cause untrusted warning messages to be displayed to end users.

Newer versions of popular browsers such as Google Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Internet Explorer on Windows Vista implement the Online Certificate Status Protocol ( OCSP ) to verify that this is not the case.

Support for SNI is available since Firefox 2, Opera 8, Safari 2. 1, Google Chrome 6, and Internet Explorer 7 on Windows Vista.
