* Isaac Hill ( 1788 – 1851 ), NH State Representative, NH State Senator, Comptroller of the United States Treasury in the Andrew Jackson administration, U. S. Senator from NH, and Governor of New Hampshire.

Originally named Rose Hill, it was part of the larger Rose Township, named after trader Isaac Rose.

At the suggestion of Governor Isaac Hill, the name was changed on December 4, 1840 to Benton, in honor of Thomas Hart Benton, the Missouri senator who championed American westward expansion.

Originally granted as New Chester in 1753, the town took the name Hill in 1837 in honor of Isaac Hill, governor of New Hampshire from 1836 to 1839.

In the latter part of the nineteenth century, North College Hill was the home of Dr. Isaac Mayer Wise, who has been called “ the most prominent Jew of his time in the United States ” for his influence as one of the early leaders of Reform Judaism in America.

Wilfred J. Funk, the son of Isaac Funk, was president of the company from 1925 – 1940.

With 1901 and the start of the new century, James Hill now had control of both the Great Northern Railway, and the Northern Pacific ( which he had obtained with the help of his friend J. P. Morgan, when that railroad went bankrupt in the depression of the mid-1890s ).

Although Great Northern and Northern Pacific were backed by J. P. Morgan and James J. Hill, the Union Pacific was backed not only by its president, Edward H. Harriman, but by the extremely powerful William Rockefeller and Jacob Schiff.

He was within 40, 000 shares of control when Hill learned of Harriman's activities and quickly contacted J. P. Morgan, who was on vacation in Europe at the time.

By the time of his death in 1916, James J. Hill was worth more than $ 53 million ( almost $ 2. 5 billion ( 2007 ) dollars ).

In 1867, James J. Hill married Mary Theresa Mehegan, born in 1846 in New York City.
