* Isaac Hill ( 1788 – 1851 ), NH State Representative, NH State Senator, Comptroller of the United States Treasury in the Andrew Jackson administration, U. S. Senator from NH, and Governor of New Hampshire.
Originally named Rose Hill, it was part of the larger Rose Township, named after trader Isaac Rose.
At the suggestion of Governor Isaac Hill, the name was changed on December 4, 1840 to Benton, in honor of Thomas Hart Benton, the Missouri senator who championed American westward expansion.
Originally granted as New Chester in 1753, the town took the name Hill in 1837 in honor of Isaac Hill, governor of New Hampshire from 1836 to 1839.
In the latter part of the nineteenth century, North College Hill was the home of Dr. Isaac Mayer Wise, who has been called “ the most prominent Jew of his time in the United States ” for his influence as one of the early leaders of Reform Judaism in America.
