On the east side of the island of Manhattan the indifferent hawk knew the East River that connected New York Bay with Long Island Sound.

On the shores north and south, the fishers and mooncursers -- smugglers -- lived along the churning Great South Bay and the narrow barrier of sand, Fire Island.

The Surf City Yacht Club ( SCYC ) participates in weekly races against other yacht clubs throughout the Island, with many sailors and swimmers ranging in age dedicating their summers to the Yacht Club

The Surf City Beach Patrol ( SCBP ) won the Surf City Epic, Lavallette, Ortley Beach, Island Beach State Park, the Midway Beach, and " Islands " Tournaments in 2008, narrowly missing out on victories at Sandy Hook ( 2nd ) and the Ship Bottom ( 2nd ) " State Tournament " losing by only a combined 4. 5 points.

The four primary hotels on the beach are The Surf Suites, Shell Island Resort, Blockade Runner and Holiday Inn Sunspree.

The three main avenues in the Coney Island community, are, from north to south, Neptune Avenue ( which crosses to the mainland to become Emmons Avenue ), Mermaid Avenue, and Surf Avenue ( which becomes Ocean Parkway and then runs north towards Brooklyn's Prospect Park ).

The Coney Island Mermaid Parade takes place on Surf Avenue and the boardwalk, and features floats and various acts.

The tents were located between the boardwalk and Surf Avenue, and the show was called The Coney Island Boom-A-Ring.

It was located at the southwest corner of West 10th Street and Surf Avenue in Coney Island.

Muncie Island, ( was just north of Oak Beach, island was depleted for the construction of Ocean Parkway ) was host to one of the most elite sanatoriums and nearby Saltaire was host to the Surf Hotel offering several hundred rooms to guests.

* In 1903, A surface extension of the Brighton Beach Line on what is now Brighton Beach Avenue permitted through service from Park Row, Manhattan west to Culver Depot at Surf Avenue near West 8th Street, much nearer to the growing amusement center known then as West Brighton and now simply as Coney Island.

At the same time, the remaining portion of the line south of Neptune Avenue was replaced with a four-track elevated structure, including a four-to six-track elevated line extension, connecting the Brighton Line to the new Coney Island terminal at Surf and Stillwell Avenues.
