During the Anglo-French War ( 1627 – 1629 ), under Charles I, by 1629 the Kirkes took Quebec City, Sir James Stewart of Killeith, Lord Ochiltree planted a colony on Cape Breton Island at Baleine, Nova Scotia and Alexander ’ s son, William Alexander, 1st Earl of Stirling established the first incarnation of “ New Scotland ” at Port Royal.

It also gave impetus to the never-ending treasure hunts conducted on Oak Island in Nova Scotia, in Suffolk County, Long Island in New York where Gardiner's Island is located, Charles Island in Milford, Connecticut ; the Thimble Islands in Connecticut and on the island of Grand Manan in the Bay of Fundy.

On 5 April Captain Charles Barnard of the American sealer Nanina was sailing off the shore of Eagle Island, with a discovery boat deployed looking for seals.

Coordinating the spectacle as road manager was Phil Kaufman, who had served time with Charles Manson on Terminal Island in the mid-sixties and first met Parsons while working for the Stones in 1968.

He syncretized Abolitionism, Free Love, spiritual universalism, ( Josiah ) Warren, & ( Charles ) Fourier into a grand utopian scheme he called the Universal Pantarchy ... He was instrumental in founding several “ intentional communities ,” including the “ Brownstone Utopia ” on 14th St. in New York, & “ Modern Times ” in Brentwood, Long Island.

A company called the Royal Adventurers of England Trading into Africa received a charter from Charles II of England in 1663 and subsequently built a fort in the Sherbro and on Tasso Island in the Freetown estuary.

There are also a number of smaller islands, such as Barents Island ( Barentsøya ) (), Kvitøya (), Prins Karls Forland ( English: Prince Charles Foreland ) (), Kongsøya (), Bear Island (), Svenskøya (), Wilhelmøya () and other smaller islands or skerries ().

A determined effort on the part of the French naval officer Jean-Baptiste Charles Bouvet de Lozier to discover the " South Land " – described by a half legendary " sieur de Gonneyville " – resulted in the discovery of Bouvet Island in 54 ° 10 ′ S, and in the navigation of 48 ° of longitude of ice-cumbered sea nearly in 55 ° S in 1730.

The Strand plays host to a yearly Mardi Gras festival, Galveston Island Jazz & Blues Festival and a Victorian-themed Christmas festival called Dickens on the Strand ( honoring the works of novelist Charles Dickens, especially A Christmas Carol ) in early December.

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge crosses the bay in Maryland from Sandy Point ( near Annapolis ) to Kent Island ; and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel in Virginia connects Virginia Beach to Cape Charles.

In the spring of 1864, New Brunswick premier Samuel Leonard Tilley, Nova Scotia premier Charles Tupper, and Prince Edward Island premier John Hamilton Gray were contemplating the idea of a Maritime Union which would join their three colonies together.

In the 10th century, Charles, Duke of Lower Lorraine constructed a fort on Saint-Géry Island, the furthest inland point at which the Senne river was still navigable.

Williams died in Queens, New York City in 1965 and was interred in Saint Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale, Long Island, New York.

A " lively summer community of fishermen and vacationers " continues to occupy Ragged Island according to McLane, but there has " rarely been year round habitation in recent years.

" McLane asserts the name " Ragged Arse Island " might have been an attempt to render " Racketash ," Abnaki for " island rocks.

" Charts in the mid-19th Century began calling it Ragged Island but, McLane asserts, the Matinicus lobstermen continue calling the island Ragged Arse " out of perversity.

The proclamation was published four months after the signing of the Treaty, in the New Zealand Advertiser and Bay Of Islands Gazette issue of 19 June 1840, the proclamation " asserts on the grounds of Discovery, the Sovereign Rights of Her Majesty over the Southern Islands of New Zealand, commonly called ' The Middle Island ' ( South Island ) and ' Stewart ’ s Island ' ( Stewart Island / Rakiura ); and the Island, commonly called ' The Northern Island ', having been ceded in Sovereignty to Her Majesty.

Domenic Vitiello, professor of Urban Studies at the University of Pennsylvania asserts that Italians working on Hog Island introduced the sandwich, by putting various meat, cheese, and lettuce between two slices of bread.

He describes Island IV being " on an east-west course " from Island III ( which contradicts his previous description of the fleet's movements in the search ), and he also asserts that from the northern point the coast ran west for 12 leagues, to its western cape, Cabo Hermoso.

At the age of 17 he became an apprentice machinist at the shop of Walcott & Harris in Valley Falls, Rhode Island, and following two or three other jobs in quick succession after graduation, he went into business for himself in 1831, making lathes and small tools.

Shortly after establishing the settlement at Port Jackson, on 15 February 1788, Phillip sent Lieutenant Philip Gidley King with 8 free men and a number of convicts to establish the second British colony in the Pacific at Norfolk Island.

The Batavi were mentioned by Julius Caesar in his commentary Commentarii de Bello Gallico, as living on an island formed by the Rhine River after it splits, one arm being the Waal the other the Lower Rhine / Old Rhine ( hence the Latin name Insula Batavorum, " Island of the Batavi ").

Clipperton Island was abandoned by the end of World War II, after briefly being occupied by the US ( 1944 – 45 ).

The Dominican Republic's small Catalina Island has been studied since 13 December 2007, by a team of underwater archaeologists from Indiana University, after an Italian tourist announced the discovery of an old wreck at just under the clear blue waters, at a distance of no more than offshore.

This court decision resulted from a complaint by the Government of Prince Edward Island after that province's number of MPs was proposed to change from 4 to 3, accounting for its declining proportion of the national population at that time.
