Sligo Creek rises in Kemp Mill, and the hiker-biker trail that runs alongside the creek from Wheaton Regional Park to the Anacostia River passes through the community.

The N4 road from Dublin to Sligo passes by the Leitrim side of the village.

The route passes through Charlestown and over the Sligo border into the village of Bellaghy.

At the crossing of the latter, Route 45 enters Mannington Township and becomes an unnamed road passes marshland with some commercial establishments and homes.

At the intersection with County Route 642, the road forms the border between Deptford Township and West Deptford Township again and passes homes.

The road passes through residential areas, intersecting with local roads before entering Carneys Point Township, where the speed limit increases to.

In Carneys Point Township, Route 48 crosses Dupont Road, becoming Harding Highway, and passes by Penns Grove High School, located on the south side of the road.

Past CR 553, the route turns north again and passes near more suburban surroundings, briefly entering Washington Township before crossing into Deptford Township.

In Mansfield Township, the road passes through the residential community of Anderson and intersects County Route 632 ( Anderson Road ) and County Route 628 ( Port Murray Road ).

In early History of Effingham County edited by William Henry Perrin in 1883, he wrote: " The name of Mound Township was bestowed upon it in consequence of what is known as the neighborhood of Blue Mound, a slight elevation of Section 8, which is nearly all a kind of mound, the apex being in the center of the section, and having an altitude of seventy-eight feet above the bed of the Vandalia Railroad, which passes near it.

U. S. Highway 53 passes briefly through the southwest corner of Canosia Township.

Saint Louis County Road 29 ( CR 29 ) passes through the northwest corner of Ness Township.

Route 73 also passes through Berlin Township.

U. S. Route 30 passes directly through the center of the Township while New Jersey Route 73 borders the western edge of the township.

Interstate 78 passes through the Township, and is accessible via Oldwick Road ( County Route 523 ) at Exit 24.
