Alexander's major break in acting came in 1967 when she played Eleanor Backman in the original production of Howard Sackler's The Great White Hope at Arena Stage in Washington, D. C. In the arts it has helped establish or support the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario, Canada, and the American Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Connecticut ; Arena Stage in Washington, D. C .; Karamu House in Cleveland, Ohio ; and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York.
