Written almost entirely by Harvey Kurtzman, the first issue also featured illustrations by Kurtzman himself, along with Wally Wood, Will Elder, Jack Davis and John Severin.

In 1948, Bette Davis, still the studio's top actress and now fed up with Jack Warner, was a big problem for Harry after she and a number of her colleagues left the studio after completing the film Beyond the Forest.

The 1990s brought Ford the role of Jack Ryan in Tom Clancy's Patriot Games ( 1992 ) and Clear and Present Danger ( 1994 ), as well as leading roles in Alan Pakula's Presumed Innocent ( 1990 ) and The Devil's Own ( 1997 ), Andrew Davis ' The Fugitive ( 1993 ), Sydney Pollack's remake of Sabrina ( 1995 ), and Wolfgang Petersen's Air Force One ( 1997 ).

Then Bette Davis wanted the role, but was under contract with Warner Brothers and Jack Warner refused to loan her.

His last set of " Lighter Side " strips, which had been written but not penciled, were illustrated after Berg's death by 18 of Mads other artists as a final tribute ; this affectionate send-off included the magazine's final new contribution from Jack Davis.

Davis anticipated that her reception would encourage Warner Bros. to cast her in more important roles, and was disappointed when Jack Warner refused to lend her to Columbia Studios to appear in It Happened One Night, and instead cast her in the melodrama Housewife.

Highly distraught, Davis attempted to withdraw from her next film Mr. Skeffington ( 1944 ); but Jack Warner, who had halted production following Farnsworth's death, convinced her to continue.

When informed that the film was to be made in Africa, Davis refused the part, telling Jack Warner, " If you can't shoot the picture in a boat on the back lot, then I'm not interested.

In 1964, Jack Warner spoke of the " magic quality that transformed this sometimes bland and not beautiful little girl into a great artist ", and in a 1988 interview, Davis remarked that, unlike many of her contemporaries, she had forged a career without the benefit of beauty.

Other small-press publishers came in to take advantage of this growing market: Pacific Comics introduced in 1981 a line of books by comic-book veterans such as Jack Kirby, Mike Grell and Sergio Aragonés, for which the artists retained copyright and shared in royalties.

The first was the Eisner Award-winning trade paperback Streetwise, a collection of autobiographical stories by such creators as Jack Kirby, Sergio Aragones, Sam Glanzman, Murphy Anderson, and Nick Cardy.

He began his professional career in 1953, working in the studio of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, beginning as an inker and coming under the influence of artist Mort Meskin.

Instead of revealing a new companion, the third door ( labeled " The Pusher ") instead reveals a new adversary for Roland: Jack Mort, a sociopath who takes sadistic pleasure in injuring and killing random strangers — and the man responsible for the head trauma that created Odetta Holmes's alternate personality, the loss of Odetta / Detta's legs, and the death of Jake Chambers.

The encounter results in the death of Jack Mort and the fusing of the personalities of Odetta and Detta to form a third woman, who will thenceforth be called Susannah.

Notable characters in the series who are police include Detective John Hartigan, his partner Bob, Lieutenants Jack Rafferty and Mort, Commissioner Liebowitz, and Officers Manson and Bundy from Hell and Back.

There is a point during the second book at which Roland psychically bonds himself with a murderer named Jack Mort ; the combination of the two personages is said to resemble the mannerisms of Arnold Schwarzenegger as he appeared in The Terminator.

In the second book, the The Dark Tower II: The Drawing of the Three, Roland goes through a doorway into the mind of Jack Mort, a serial killer.

Roland discovers in horror that Jack Mort was the man who pushed Jake in front of the oncoming car, under the guise of a priest ( which is why Jake confused him with the Man in Black ).
