A small number of non-Klingon characters were later depicted in Star Trek as having learned to speak Klingon, notably Jean-Luc Picard and Jadzia Dax.

In early 2373, Worf became involved with DS9 science officer Jadzia Dax who was a Trill woman.

After Worf joined Martok's house, his son Alexander would be inducted into the house, as would Jadzia Dax, when she married Worf ( the latter was initially opposed by Sirella ).

The role of Ezri Dax was created when Terry Farrell ( who played Jadzia Dax ) decided to leave the show and her character was subsequently killed by Dukat.

Jadzia was married to Lieutenant Commander Worf, who at first refuses to speak to Ezri, convinced that Jadzia has gone on to Sto-Vo-Kor and can no longer exist through the Dax symbiont.

It was necessary that the character of Ezri avoid being a carbon copy of Jadzia, just as it was necessary for Commander Benjamin Sisko not to be a copy of James T. Kirk.

Other differences included the change in makeup style from a prosthetic forehead to a series of spots, although some makeup tests and sketches were made in the preproduction of Deep Space Nine using the earlier makeup style, but the actress who would play Jadzia Dax, Terry Farrell, proved allergic to the extensive prostheses, and so the new style was created.

That same year, Janssen was offered the role of Jadzia Dax in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, but turned it down to pursue film roles.
