* October – John Hanning Speke and James Augustus Grant leave Zanzibar to search for the source of the Nile River.

They had seven children ( five sons and two daughters ): Eliza Arabella Garfield ( 1860 – 63 ); Harry Augustus Garfield ( 1863 – 1942 ); James Rudolph Garfield ( 1865 – 1950 ); Mary Garfield ( 1867 – 1947 ); Irvin M. Augustus John and his student James Dickson Innes spent two years painting in the Arenig valley around 1910, especially the mountain Arenig Fawr.

It was written by Ruth and Augustus Goetz, adapted from their 1947 play of the same title that was based on the 1880 novel Washington Square by Henry James.

The approach continues through the great portico into the hall, its ceiling painted by James Thornhill with the Duke's apotheosis, then on under a great triumphal arch, through the huge marble door-case with the Duke's marble effigy above it ( bearing the ducal plaudit " Nor could Augustus better calm mankind "), and into the painted saloon, the most highly decorated room in the palace, where the Duke was to have sat enthroned.
