However, the transition between these two theories met much resistance, not only from Christian theologians, who were reluctant to reject a theory that was in agreement with Bible passages ( e. g. In 1406 English pirates captured the future James I of Scotland off the coast of Flamborough Head as he was going to France.

On 22 March 1406 the ship was taken by English pirates off Flamborough Head and James became the hostage of King Henry IV of England.

Upon his return to England, Rivers became aware of a series of experiments being conducted by his old friend Henry Head in conjunction with James Sherren, a surgeon at the London Hospital where they both worked.
