When the Doctor later discovered clues as to what had happened, Captain Janeway was convinced by him and others that he had a right to learn to come to grips with the guilt in the manner of any other sentient being rather than be treated merely as a defective piece of equipment.

Although Janeway simply tolerates Neelix at first, she later comes to respect and value Neelix as an important member of the crew eventually appointing him as unofficial ship's Ambassador after he proves his diplomatic abilities.

An amused Captain Janeway tells him " you may be the captain some day, but not today.

" In the alternate future, Admiral Janeway reminds Captain Kim of the time when he was still an Ensign on Voyager that he wanted to enter the Borg-infested nebula because of the promise of a way home it held, and he reminds her that she stopped him.

Janeway provides Kim with a encoded message in the signal, a recording that future Kim had sent to himself in the past, giving him confidence in his abilities.

Janeway is clearly moved by this and agrees to grant him asylum.

Even the Vaskan in the simulation became horrified over the atrocities committed, but the simulated Janeway told him it was too late to stop now.

Tuvok explains he would go to one of the Vulcans on board but he feels Janeway is the best choice to assist him in locating and reintegrating the memory.

With no living being left connected, the crew finish disabling the computer, leaving the clown frightful of the darkness as it engulfs him and the simulation of Janeway.

Captain Janeway is highly suspicious of Kashyk's actual motives, but allows him to help with the Brenari's approval.
