Japanese painting is one of the oldest and most highly refined of the Japanese arts, encompassing a wide variety of genre and styles.

The history of Japanese painting is a long history of synthesis and competition between native Japanese aesthetics and adaptation of imported ideas.

Sekien originally was trained in the aristocratic Kanō School of painting, but in middle age he started to lean toward the popular Ukiyo-e, a genre of Japanese woodblock prints.

The shin-hanga (" New Prints ") movement, a print equivalent to the Nihonga movement in painting, drew upon ukiyo-e traditions, creating images of traditional Japanese scenes, in traditional modes and forms.

Traditional Japanese furniture is well known for its minimalist style, extensive use of wood, high-quality craftsmanship and reliance on wood grain instead of painting or thick lacquer.

Under the influence of folk art and Japanese prints, Gauguin's work evolved towards Cloisonnism, a style given its name by the critic Édouard Dujardin in response to Émile Bernard's method of painting with flat areas of color and bold outlines, which reminded Dujardin of the Medieval cloisonné enamelling technique.

The renovation of the gallery where the painting now resides was financed by the Japanese broadcaster Nippon Television.
