) Jarlaxle understands that information is power, especially in a city like Menzoberranzan, where schemes, intrigue and secrecy are paramount, and Bregan D ' aerthe is always well-informed about the events in Menzoberranzan.

Although he typically favors beautiful women, unlike most drow, who are so caught up in their own prejudices that they view all other races as inferior and would never think of sleeping with them, Jarlaxle often chases human women, and would probably bed women of most other races if the opportunity presented itself.

Jarlaxle also possesses a seemingly endless supply and variety of slender magical wands which are capable of releasing anything from a lightning bolt to a great blob of goo, powerful healing water, or illusionary and real fireballs.

Details are sketchy and Jarlaxle's upbringing are unknown, but Jarlaxle did seem to attract Lloth's approval at one point.

It also is hinted that a few drow are beginning to suspect that Jarlaxle is no longer blessed by Lolth.

The sentient shard is thus a tragic ' character '; it is driven to pursue evil or amoral ends because it was scarred by traumatic, tragic events during its formative years ; this part of the shard's history was revealed in Servant of the Shard, whose primary characters, Jarlaxle and Artemis Entreri, are also amoral individuals willing to commit unethical acts because they were scarred by tragedy and betrayal during their formative years.

More than once in various novels, it has been remarked that Jarlaxle is one of the most protected drow in the Underdark due to the competent soldiers he surrounds himself with.

While living in Mithral Hall, Bruenor fakes his own death in order to leave, journeying with Drizzt and Thibbldorf Pwent, and later Jarlaxle and Athrogate, to again seek Gauntlgrym.

Unlike Jarlaxle, he has never shown much interest in, or desire to, formally control an organization such as a thieves ' guild, although his reputation and skills could have allowed him to do so with relative ease ( when he removed Regis the halfling from the leadership position of the guild formerly led by Pasha Pook, the guild was his for the taking, but he chose to leave Calimport in pursuit of his revenge against Drizzt Do ' Urden.

In the short story That Curious Sword, Entreri accidentally infuses himself with part of the essence of a shade when he uses his jeweled dagger ( capable of magically draining life energy ) to kill the shade attacking him and Jarlaxle.

The gauntlet, however, was recently destroyed when Entreri braved a lich's tower with his partner, the dark elf Jarlaxle.

He got his chance a few months later on the slopes of the Spine of the World near Mithral Hall, where he joined forces with the mercenary Jarlaxle and his band Bregan D ' aerthe.

Nonetheless, the ensuing fight ended with Artemis nearly dying and saved by Jarlaxle, only to be taken to Menzoberranzan under his command.

Jarlaxle also decided to grant Entreri his wish to fight once more with his nemesis, Drizzt Do ' Urden, after the opportunistic mercenary tricked the drow ranger into giving him the evil artifact, Crenshinibon.

After Entreri aided Jarlaxle, Cadderly, and their companions in a quest to destroy the malevolent Crystal Shard, he traveled with the drow mercenary leader Jarlaxle to the Damara area in search of new adventures.

Artemis then goes separate ways with Jarlaxle at the end of Road of the Patriarch.

It is also mentioned that he was threatened with joining Jarlaxle when they paraded his lover before him, though it is likely Calihye, as it mentioned that the lover had been captive of the dark elves.

Always calm and composed, although with an ever-ready quip, Jarlaxle enjoys flaunting his independence and is proud of the fact that the noble houses come to him for aid.

For enough money, Jarlaxle and his band might ally with Gromph Baenre, the Archmage of Menzoberranzan, to set about changing Menzoberranzan's Lolth and female-dominated society and to squeeze as much adventure and pleasure from life as he possibly can.

Jarlaxle has worked hard to recruit individuals with a wide variety of talents ( such as fighters, psionicists, etc.

Jarlaxle has no problem dealing with other races, even traditional enemies of the drow, if there is a profit in it ( and if it can be done without provoking the greater powers of Menzoberranzan or the Spider Queen's clerics.

Jarlaxle loves making profits, but he seems to enjoy irritating and unsettling personages in power even more ( particularly the ruling priestesses of the Spider Queen, who generally view him with veiled contempt — because he is a male rogue without house — and frustration — because he always tends to be flippant and disrespectful, and killing him is simply not an option.

Although he enjoys adventuring, both for the potential profits and the entertainment value the excitement provides, and adventuring typically means leaving the comforts of civilization behind, Jarlaxle typically brings luxury with him — usually in the form of a magical item that can produce any number of outrageous luxury items he desires.

It was led by Jarlaxle Baenre, up until Servant of the Shard and is currently led by the drow psionicist Kimmuriel Oblodra.

The company ’ s reputation was widespread, though, tolerated by the ruling houses, and most in the city would name Jarlaxle among the most powerful of Menzoberranzan ’ s males.

( This is in contrast to Jarlaxle, who loves material luxuries, and when in Jarlaxle's company, Entreri has often acceded to indulging in certain luxuries, such as wearing fine and expensive clothing, at the drow's insistence.

The drow Jarlaxle is also well-known, as he is one of the few males in Menzoberranzan to obtain a position of great power.

Founded by Jarlaxle Baenre as a means for houseless rogues to survive in Menzoberranzan, the group has thrived and expanded greatly since its inception.

Bruenor travels to Spirit Soaring in The Ghost King and helps Drizzt, Jarlaxle, Danica Maupoissant, and Athrogate kill the dracolich Haephestus.

In The Sellswords book series, Jarlaxle comments to his drow compatriots that a monk ( referring to Grandmaster Kane ) fights in the same manner as the kuo-toa, using their body as a weapon.

In the " Sellswords " series of books, Jarlaxle Baenre and Artemis Entreri encounter, fight, and come to control a dracolich, which in life had been a black dragon named Urshula.

In the " Transitions " book series, Cadderly, Drizzt, Ivan, Pikel, Jarlaxle, and Bruenor fight the red dragon-turned-dracolich, Hephaestus, from the Sellswords books series.

They fight the dracolich because it seeks revenge on Jarlaxle and Cadderly for ridding it of its sight and taking its prize ( see Sellswords series, Servant of the Shard ), and because they believe the dragon to be the source of Cattie-Brie's " trance " and seizures of memories occurring.

Only a few people in Menzoberranzan know of Jarlaxle's connection to House Baenre as Yvonnel threw Jarlaxle into Lake Donigarten after the failed attempt to sacrifice him.

Killed at the sacrificial birth ceremony of third son Jarlaxle.

Yvonnel tried to sacrifice Jarlaxle to Lady Lolth but failed due to the telekinetic interference of House Oblodra.

Duquaio died when he picked up Jarlaxle and all the stabbings of Yvonnel flowed into him through the kinetic barrier.

" It has also been hypothesized by Jarlaxle Baenre, who knows Artemis very well, that somebody close to him, most likely a " parent or a close family friend " ( possibly a priest, and definitely a traveling merchant who helped him get to Calimshan ), betrayed him when he was less than nine years of age.

He has since begun to slightly trust Jarlaxle, as much as he could trust anyone.
